Engineering School Selection

Hello all,
I'm currently a freshman engineering student and I'll have around 35 credits (12 or so more that I took at my CC in high school but aren't applicable) that i'm almost positive will transfer to most schools and apply towards my BS.

I really have no clue where I want to transfer to but if I maintain the grades Im getting now in English, History, Chemistry, Calc ll and Analyic Geo then Im confident ill be accepted to most schools.

I'm not really interested in the very elite(MIT,Stanford, etc.) and want to go to a large school with a solid MechE program-say top 75. I know it seems dumb but Im going to leave my home state arbitrary because Im open to any school in the US and let's assume price is irrelevant. Obviously these are both important but I want as varied suggestions as possible. Schools with sufficient industry connections are a must. Honestly I cannot deny that I would rather go to less liberal, lower minority rate schools but also I don't want to go somewhere with all white christians who are close minded.

I really want to be around other students who are ambitious and creative.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

when was the last time one adult asked another to help them shop for a car but said “let’s assume price is irrelevant”? or said to their friend, “I want the best possible car that only a few liberals or people of color drive”? how did that work out on each occasion?

Have your parents assured you that price is irrelevant?

Okay well that didn’t work. Realistically under $30k/year InState is VA

What’s wrong with your in-state public schools like VT, UVA, VCU, ODU?

For engineering it’s tough to beat VT

VT is really my safety school, UVa I can’t transfer into until after sophomore year. Nothing wrong with VT and I know it’s better than other programs I WOULD pick over it. VT isn’t ~30 minutes away from home and I would rather have a bigger “change of scenery” than that.
Clearly VT makes the most sense but I don’t want to limit myself just yet.

What would be better than UVA or VT, but cost $30k per year.

University of Minnesota is not better, but it is up there…assuming the OP really wants to leave the state. Minnesota will cost a little more than VTech, but not much more. But be warned, Minnesota is COLD! hehe!

I’ve seen the UofMin so many times and always ignore it (along with other far north schools) because I get the instant image of being cold as anything haha. Being that it isnt too expensive though I will give it more of chance

^by seen I mean it’s name on various lists, not been to the campus

Try Bob Jones University. Oh wait, they don’t have an engineering department. Don’t despair. You and like minded souls can start your own engineering major at BJU. You’ll be fit as a fiddle, intellectually speaking. Or not.

Actually, Bob Jones does have engineering:

oh wow…missed that.

I know that some kids want “more liberal” or “less liberal” and that’s ok…but to say “lower minority rate” sounds racist. Most schools are trying to be more diverse.

You kind of want a school that doesn’t exist. Something better than what you already have available (VT and UVA), $30k, few minorities, and less liberal. The southern schools would probably be “less liberal” (they’re more middle of the road or right-of-center), but they also have ethnic diversity, and would likely cost you more than $30k

I wasn’t saying I didn’t want to be around minorities or liberals, I just don’t want to go to schools where most people are majoring in philosophy, art history and english or a school where half the student’s first language isn’t english. These schools typically have alot of liberals and minorities, correct? I am friends with a lot of people of different ethnicies, religions and political views and I really don’t give a darn because they don’t inflict their differences on me and vice versa. If you really think I’m so close-minded and have offended you then I apologize, but I’m not entitled to anyone’s advice so don’t advise me.

I do appreciate the replies though, I’ve got alot to ponder in the near future so valuable input is very helpful. mom2collegekids I really respect that you pointed out how I sounded a bit “racist” BUT also gave your opinion too.
Honestly I’ll probably go to VT. I think it will provide enough of the college experience I’m looking for even though it’s close to home. We’ll see after I I’ve received letters back in the spring.
