So what do you think? I know I could probably get into Purdue, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, etc. but what about the more prestigious engineering schools?

I appreciate the input. :)

I’m not saying USNews is accurate, but it’s one place to start: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/engineering-majors/769210-complete-usnews-2010-undergrad-engineering-rankings-phd-granting-schools.html</a></p>

Another perspective: [NRC Rankings](<a href=“NRC Rankings”>NRC Rankings)

Michigan, Illinois, and Purdue are easily among the top ten.

It looks like you will stand a chance no matter where you want to go assuming you have the type of SAT scores that would support your claim of a very good highschool.

Do you want to go to a big school or a small school?
Do you want to live in a big city or small town?
What can you afford?
What type of engineering do you want to do?

^ Good SAT has nothing to do with the type of HS and the OP provided his ACT scores, but those are good questions.

OP, an UW GPA tops out at 4.0 but you should be competitive for most engineering schools. What can your family afford?

ACT scores are a bit low for Stanford and MIT. Need a 33 or higher.

Lehigh ¶, Bucknell ¶, Georgia Tech, Union (NY) and RPI (NY) might be worth a look. Best of luck!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/engineering-majors/769210-complete-usnews-2010-undergrad-engineering-rankings-phd-granting-schools.html</a></p>

Question, if the weighted GPA is out of 5.0 how does someone score a 5.27? I thought on a weighted sysytem, in the case a 5.0, you capped out at that number. I am just curious how that works.

As far as Engineering options, there are so many options, such as whether you would prefer a big university or LAC. A previous poster suggested some good questions to consider. One other thing, I do agree that you you should retake the ACT to see if you could get your score up a little, and try the SAT if you have not. Your ACT score is very good, but it seems like with a 5.27 GPA it could be a little higher. Good luck to you and once you have more information about your preferences in a college, you will find that there are many options.

I’ve been looking around for the best engineering schools. I’m not sure what type of engineering I want to go into, but I know that I want to apply into the school of engineering. Here’s my transcript/other information.
I’m also looking at engineering schools, more focused on aero and maybe agricultural/biological. I’m mainly into going to a top school (looking at u of ill, purdue, v tech, and texas a&m). I live in ohio so out of state tuition is kinda a big deal, we can’t really manage anything over 40k a year.

Core Information
Weighted GPA (on 5.0 scale) 4.45
Non-weighted GPA(on 4.0): 3.9
Weighted Rank: 28/332- my high school is also competitive, like top 10 in state
ACT score: Havn’t taken ACT yet, but I plan on only taking the ACT (opinions) unless I’m thinking about private schools. I’m taking it in april and june.

AP/Honors Classes:
AP Statistics (current)
AP Art History (current)
AP Physics B (senior)
AP Spanish Lang (senior)
AP Calc AB/BC (senior)

AP English Lang (senior)

I’ve taken pretty much all honors core courses in spanish, sciences, maths, histories, and english. My gpa is low though because of tech drawing (which is non honors and a ton of work)
*Important: I got my first b’s this past semester (actually in a string of 4) 1 regular B and 3 B+'s so I don’t know how that effects my chances at some colleges (certainly brought down my gpa a ton). Thankfully the b’s were in honors classes at least

Other Accelerated Courses of Interest:
Tech drawing 1-3-- We design all kinds of things and use programs on the comp to do so. Im “fluent” in autocad, revit, and inventor. We’ve won various contests, and do architecture, engineering, and design.

Extra-Curriculars
Varsity XC freshman & soph
Varsity track freshman-senior
Hospital volunteer (4hrs per saturday)
Random volunteer hours all around
Anticipated NHS
Possible internship at nasa this summer for 8 weeks, hopefully i make it
SADD, techmates club- both no leadership posit.

Should I apply to any private colleges? This track season seems like it will be good, so the possibility of a recruitment is always there. I’m no state champion, but fairly good.

Money seems to be the biggest issue here. Were well off, but all my families money goes into properties and businesses, so when you add property values and such, it looks as though I can go to any school I want. The truth is though that it’s not all there, so again a school under 40k is really what I’m looking for.

rcs1113 give Embry-Riddle a look if you are seriously considering Aerospace Engineering as well as the big names that you have mentioned. I am not sure what kind of financial aid they give but even if you get no financial aid with room and board expected costs are still below 40K a year. [Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - World’s Leader in Aviation and Aerospace Education](Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University)

I’ve heard of that university but never really looked into it. I will most likely be applying to that school come next year–especially with campuses in daytona beach and arizona lol. Only downside I see to this university is that the female population is only 17%. I know I’m not at colleges to chase girls, but I like to have a good time.
Any other schools you recommend that may be a little larger in size and closer to 50-50 in sexes while still being a good school at engineering. I know i’m basically asking for utopia since girls generally don’t choose engineering majors over guys.
Gahhh, I hate how out of state tuition screws me over, and same with my academic level. I’m not smart enough for schools like standford/mit/berkeley/caltech but (not to be vain) i feel I would fit into an engineering school better than those in my state (OSU being the best one).

Any knowledge of merit scholarships for U of ill, purdue, vtech, texas a&m or others? I didn’t like u of mich that much when I visited (on top of it being close to 50k a year).

Rice might come in under $40K, but while known for engineering - electrical, civil, bio, chem, aerospace engineering isn’t one of its strong suits. For that I would choose GaTech.

“So what do you think? I know I could probably get into Purdue, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, etc. but what about the more prestigious engineering schools?”

You must mean MIT, Stanford, Cal, or Caltech. Those are the only four that are marginally more prestigious than UIUC, Michigan, and Purdue for engineering.

"i feel I would fit into an engineering school better than those in my state (OSU being the best one).

Any knowledge of merit scholarships for U of ill, purdue, vtech, texas a&m or others? I didn’t like u of mich that much when I visited"

Is it really surprising that a Buckeye wouldn’t like “u of mich that much?” ;-)

@BobbyCT

At my school we have a 5.0 GPA system, but an A in an Honors class is worth a 5.5 and an A in an AP class is worth a 6.0. So it is possible to score higher than a 5.0 on your weighted GPA.

My unweighted, however, doesn’t take accelerated courses into account and so that one caps at 5.0

* What can your family afford? *

Erin’s Dad is right. You need to consider what your family can afford.

OOS publics don’t give much aid, yet their costs are high.

And, other schools may expect your family to pay more than it can afford.

Talk to your parents to get a budget.
