Engineering=send lackluster Sat2s or not?

Son is applying to Eng, wants aerospace, so competitive. Has the grades, and ACT is 35 but unsure about sending Sat2 tests. It says, "SAT Subject Tests are not required, however applicants to the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science are strongly encouraged to take the following SAT Subject Tests: Math Level 2 and a science test (Biology E/M, Chemistry, or Physics) that is closely related to the applicant's intended major."

He is taking AP Physics now so he didn't take sat2 physics. He has us history=800, Bio E=780 but low math of 760. I think the percentages are Hist 98%, Bio 96% but math is 77%?! He did get a 5 in his AP Calc test. ACT breakdown is 35eng, 34math, 36 read, 36 science.

He is asking for my opinion and I just don't know. Should he send the Sat2 scores or skip it? Same for Berkeley and some other UCs. Can't send it to one without all of them seeing it. I read here that you don't need them to apply but you need them to be accepted!

760 is a strong math 2 score. The percentile is lower than an equivalent score in other SAT 2’s because the math 2 test group clearly self selects and consists of many test takers with strong math skills. Even a perfect 800 in math 2 would appear to be a relatively low percentile compared to other SAT 2s.

I encourage you to send the score. It’s effectively required.

Thank you, fogcity! I appreciate the reply. Son thought he should send it but after today’s announcement re Boeing, he is rethinking the aerospace major.

If subject test scores are “strongly recommended,” I would definitely send them. His scores are not bad at all. 760 is Math 2 is a lower percentile than the other two, but anything above 750 will not hurt his chances as an engineer.
