I will be attending Cornell in the Fall and I was wondering about engineering software. I want to know what software ALL engineers use and what software ECEs and ORIEs use. I ask because my school has access to a good selection of engineering software including some Autodesk software and some Comp. Sci. software. I would like to familiarize myself with the software and see if I could acquire it through my school. I've seen the engineering library's list of engineering software, but it does not indicate WHO(i.e. which engineers) uses that software.

I would also definitely love to know which software is used. I’m been working a bit in inventor/autocad and knowing exactly what I need to get will be great =)

The software we use really varies a lot…if you’re interested in ECE/ORIE, you’ll probably end up taking java as your intro programming class, but if you have MATLAB, its not a bad thing to know. I’ve used it a fair amount in upper level courses.

I’m an ECE and I’ve never touched inventor/autocad, but I know some MechEs who live and die by it.

It also REALLY depends on the class…different professors prefer different software packages.

Sorry I can’t help more :(

In my OR classes, the only ones you would have to pay for is Microsoft access and matlab (although I’ve only used it in my cs100 class). Free software i’ve used include R (statistics), AMPL (a language used for optimization problems and there is a free student version), and eclipse (a programming editor).

People really don’t buy any software though. Everyone either goes to a computer lab or download a free student version. And in most cases, you will only really use the software for the class that needs uses it and will probably never use it again. The Labs in the ACCEL in the engineering library and the upson lab often have the software you need. Most departments have their own labs too which also provide the necessary software.

Thank You! Your replies have been very helpful!

Do you guys know what software is used for circuit simulation in the College of Engineeing ? I know Autodesk sells something that’s kind of like a derivative of AutoCAD for EEs.

Maybe you guys indirectly answered one of my questions but, is there any software used by all engineers?

probably the software used in the intro CS classes: matlab and DrJava (the programming editor they force you to use in CS100) or eclipse. Other than that, there is probably not much overlap.

For circuit simulation, its usually spice or cadence, which the ECE department provides
