engineering stats

Is it easier to get accepted into SEAS than other schools? Is there a way to look up admission stats for the engineering school?

[UVa - First-Time First-Year Admission](http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/data_catalog/institutional/data_digest/adm_first.htm)
also see things like [UVa - Mathematics SAT Scores](http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/data_catalog/institutional/data_digest/adm_math.htm)

Don’t apply to the e-school simply because it has high admission rates. It has high rates because the people who apply actually want to go there and show they can hack it. If you come in to the e-school just to get into UVa, you’re doomed

hence why I noted the large difference in SAT math scores during admission… so it’s not really “easier” when you think of it that way

I agree with shoe and hazel. One note – presuming if you are actually really interested in engineering, don’t be greatly concerned if your math score is below average. You can still certainly succeed at SEAS with a decent work ethic and there is tutoring available, plus there are many students that will be happy to help.

So are you saying the engineering department at UVA is bad?

It is not bad at all.

There is a rumour/misleading info that suggests it is easier to get into the Engineering school than the College. This is only true if you have the pre-engineering requisites complete, such as a higher SAT math score and lots of science courses in high school or a desire to make up your lack of pre-reqs (suppose your school doesn’t offer them or you realize late in high school that you want to do engineering for example). You can’t just apply to the e-school to get in easier and then transfer to the College to try and increase your odds of getting into UVA, which is what people think they might be able to do. I hope that makes it clearer…

Re: the whole transfer from the College to e-school- this year at DOTL we were told that more students had actually wanted to switch to e-school instead of vice versa prior to enrollment. I thought that was interesting.

I thought it was the same thing applying to the e-school and the college.

If you look at the links above you’ll see College is 31% acceptance rate vs Eschool 42%. But the SAT math difference is College 664 mean vs eschool 713. So you can see how it’s not a straightforward “eschool is easier” in fact it might be the opposite for just the average applicant with no science leanings.

Whats the difference in being at the e-school and the actual college, I thought when you applied to the e-school, you were in the college? I am a little new, sorry for inconvinience.

Mr. A, when you apply to the University (assuming you are a 1st year applicant and not a transfer) you will have to select from one of the schools- engineering, arts and science, architecture or nursing.

I completely agree with shoebox10- while it initially seems to be easier to get into e-school at UVA versus other schools, it’s mainly because a majority of the students who apply for e-school want to go to UVA, as opposed to other colleges, and hence have very good stats.

Oh I see what your talking about, but how would you rate the engineering department.

It’s very tough. I don’t know what you mean by rate, do you mean job placements or grad school acceptance rates, top faculty, love of school by students… there’s no one rating.

Like how is the engineering department, is it good, do people like it.

It’s good I like it.

WOuld you say it is the best in Virginia.

What type of engineering are you interested in? D is a first year in SEAS. Of course as her parents, we think UVA is the best school for engineering- for her. Hard to tell if it would be the best school for you. She loves it- you may not.

I am most interested in computer engineering and computer science.
