ENGINEERING summer classes: 9 units, 8 weeks: Cal ll & Programming w C++ (beginners, online)

BACKGROUND:

In the first couple of weeks of this 2018 semester, I was dealing with changing majors, sleepless nights (in regards to that) and cancelling my readmission to UCSC as junior in biomolecular engineering.

I switched from biomolecular engineering to biochemical engineering, which completely overlap in their lower division coursework, so I’m still on track.

UCD is the only university in California with an accrediated biochemical engineering major. In order to apply to TAG to UCD in Sept. of 2018, I need a 3.3 MAJOR GPA. At the moment I have a 3.1 MAJOR GPA and an overall 3.4 GPA. I need 3 classes worth of A’s before the fall in order to have a 3.4 MAJOR GPA.

I’m taking the first physics class (not a prereq) and I just recently dropped Cal ll because I fell behind on my math hw. There were 4 assigments due every week and I fell behind the first two weeks because of the whole major fiasco, but I still managed to keep up with physics. Also that specific instructor had the class broken down to 500 points: 10% hw and 90%exams (usually STEM classes have 1000 pts and up to 70% for exams, including finals). I dropped after reaching trig subs and I had done the substisution rule hw, which wasn’t bad after reviews trig identities, but I was still grossly behind.

Since I need to have all A’s and both classes are really demanding, I didn’t find it logical to try to sacrifice my physics grade (since I’m doing well in that class) in order to get a below A grade in calculus.

Now, because I need to have all my classes completed by the Spring semester, this summer is looking like a little bit intimidating just because I know that Cal ll is a bit of a monster compared to Cal l.

QUESTION:

I need to take 8 weeks of Cal ll (5 units) and a Programming w C++ (beginners. 4 units) class online over summer and I need to get A’s in both these classes.

I will not be working AT ALL during this time .

Last summer, I took 7 units:

COMM 2, 3 units (4 weeks)
ENGL 2, 3 units (6 weeks)
COMM 1, co-req 1 unit (2 Saturdays 8am-4pm)

I got all A’s in these classes, but granted, they are NOT ENGINEERING CLASSES.

I’M NOT ASKING IF THE STEM COMBO IS DOABLE, I’M ASKING IF ANYONE HAS IT BEFORE, OR ANYTHING SIMILAR AND IF THEY HAVE ANY ADVICE, ANYTHING TO LOOK OUT FOR IN THE CAL ll, PARTICULARLY CHALLENGING SUBJECTS BECAUSE I HAVE A LOT OF TIME OF MY HANDS NOW AND I WANT GET PREPARED.

I didn’t read all of this but an issue immediately popped up re units:

  1. Two years at UCSC? How many units did you complete? They count them all. You cannot round off UC units if the grand total is over 70.
  2. In order to secure TAG, assuming you hit the GPA minimum, you must complete 30 units from a CCC by end of next spring.

Add that 30 to your total UC count. (Example: 56 UC + 30 CCC = 86.)

You may be over some UC transfer unit maximums:

Merced and Davis have a 80 semester unit transfer cap.
UCLA is 86.5
The rest are 90 units.

Now if you lessen the CCC units and don’t TAG, you could just apply. You won’t get CCC priority because you need 30 units from a CCC to get that, but you’ll at least be able to apply and many get in who do not have CCC priority. If you’re a few units over Davis limit, they still might take you, I have no idea. But keep in mind they have limits.

I already talked to counselors about this and Im fine in that’s aspect. I’m not worried about units. This major is very unit heavy, I’m worried about getting all my lower division major units done by the spring on 2019 bc UCD engineering majors are impacted, I can’t get in w/o those classes. That’s why I’m trying to take 9 units over summer. Not tagging is not an option for me. I need a no questions asked admission, this is the only UC that has my major in California. I’m not trying to go out of state.

Ok just keep in mind you need 30 CCC units by spring to TAG. And over 50 semester units from UCSC could make your Davis TAG invalid.

I don’t have any units from UCSC. All units are from my CC and I have 30 units rn as I am without this semesters units. I’m not worried about units. This post is not about units, it’s about taking 2 STEM classes over the summer, I was just giving context, maybe I gave too much.

Oh your comment about cancelling readmission to UCSC as a junior confused me.

Calc 2 is not that hard, but I guess your professor could make it hard. Pulling an A in the summer might be tough though. The Programming class should be easy.

I would look into the professor for Calc 2 that will really determine your shot at getting an A in the summer

Also the part of Calc to that people usually find most difficult is Series and Sequences, Trig Sub, and I can’t really think of anything else. I think I had a tough time with like arc length problems but that might have just been me.

Maybe get ahead by watching the Calc 2 playlist on Professor Leonards youtube channel
