I am planning on majoring in engineering, specifically, Industrial and Systems Engineering. I've always been interested in journalism, writing articles for Time and such. Would it be possible to break into journalism with an engineering degree?

of course. You can become a journalist with any major, and something other than journalism is often a good idea. What you're suggesting is a great way to go, because there are lots of people with journalism degrees that have never taken a science course and hate math, but people with an engineering background who can write are far rarer.

But don't expect to just show up with your degree in hand and get a job. You need to start on the path towards journalism while in college. Take classes that give you plenty of writing assignments. Even more important, get involved in journalism. Take part in your student paper, get an internship or summer job for a paper, submit articles to student journals and regular media, etc. By the time you graduate you want to have a portfolio of your work and some real-world experience you can discuss. You should also be visiting the career center early on to get more advice.

It's possible. Your best bet would be to write for some sort of engineering journal. Get plenty of writing experience, and keep up-to-date on new engineering info, and you'll have a shot.
