Engineering Transfer

Well, after a quarter of "exploration" at Ohio State I've all but decided to pursue a major in electrical engineering (with as much physics as they'll let me take). Now according to multiple reputable sources, UIUC has a world class program for this major, and indeed engineering in general. I am a resident of Illinois and got denied last year, but I ran a 3.65 this quarter so the fire has been rekindled.

Relevant information:

University stuff -

Honors Accelerated Calc 1 - B+
Intro to Philosophy - A
Intro to Microeconomics - A-
Random Survey class worth 1 credit hour - B+ (attendance issues - 8:30 comes early)

16 CH so far

Next quarter will be fun

Intro to engineering
Intro to C++ programming
Physics
Honors Accelerated Calc 2
History (depends if I can handle this many classes for 10 weeks. If not, this is easily droppable.)

= 22 more CH (17 sans history)

HS stuff -

33 ACT
2200 SAT
3.2/3.3 GPA UW/W (roughly)
4 Years of swimming
4 years of water polo
a bunch of music stuff
writing tutor

overall I did a lot of cool things in HS

Anyway, this a sort of half-chance and half-"what should I do in order to not get denied again" thread. I know I need to take the UofI equivalent to some amount of chemistry, but I have the third quarter and summer school to do that. Is a 3.6 enough? Any help + information would of course be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

EDIT: oh yeah Ohio State runs on quarters instead of semesters, at least for two more years.

*** how did you not get in. i got in with a 31 act 3.85 uw gpa oos. i think they dwell on the gpa too much

Yes, University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign is one of the worlds best schools for engineering ( math and science). It will be difficult to get admitted in general, likely more difficult as a transfer student. You should probably seek additional information from admission office as well.

Oh yeah I’am surprise you were not admitted into UIUC with those stats, GPA may have been a factor… difficult course load in HS?

I can’t help you too much on judging your chances of admission. I am not sure if the following will be good advice for improving your admission (it would make sense that admissions committees would weigh heavily whether the applicant has prepared well for the program he wants to transfer into, but i don’t actually know if that is the case).

I will give you some good advice for picking courses that will transfer into UIUC’s EE program. Although most of it is obvious–you’ve heard a lot of it before, I’m sure.

Look at the requirements on this site.

[Undergraduate Programs in ECE - ECE ILLINOIS - U of I](http://www.ece.illinois.edu/current/ugrad/)

Try to get credit transferred in for as many dark blue classes on the diagram as you can. I’d focus mostly on general education requirements, the required chemistry course, and the required math and physics courses.

Some advice that you may not have received before: the introductory course in C++ probably won’t get you any useful credit. The introductory programming course in the ECE dept. at UIUC is a little different than most–most other introductory programming courses don’t transfer in as ECE190 credit.
