Engineering Undergrad Help (URGENT!)

If you go through an athletic pre-read at Mudd, does the coach guarantee admissions or give you a percentage chance? I’d always heard that Mudd coaches had some pull, but not that much.

@vhsdad I might be a special case compared to any past/current Mudd swim recruits, considering I applied last year and was waitlisted. The coach never said I’m guaranteed admissions nor gave a percentage chance, even though I’m supposedly a top 3 recruit. He did say that 4 people last year who applied ED as recruits were all admitted, and that as I applied last year, applying again ED would boost my chances. He’s relatively confident I’ll get admitted, but there’s no certainty. 75% odds maybe?

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of being waitlisted one year would have a bearing on a subsequent year. Also, were you recruited last year at Mudd as well?

528 were waitlisted last year…12 were offered admission. I wouldn’t hold out much hope that it means much.

@vhsdad @eyemgh I was recruited last year, but I applied RD so it didn’t mean as much as ED1 or ED2. For whatever it’s worth the coach says that admissions would view my app more positively as I’m showing interest by applying a second time, and this time ED. Again I’m not saying I’m a shoe-in but based on my coach’s conversation with admissions I feel decently confident with my chances, which is the only thing I can be. That said, if you guys really think that Mudd is still questionable, it seems I might as well keep my Cornell app, wait to see what happens ED and then do ED2 to Mudd if necessary.

I wish you luck at both, but would say both are reaches, meaning your chances are below 50%, based on your GPA. Swimming might get you over the hump at Mudd, but they’re a tiny DIII swimming program. It’s not like we’re talking NCAA Football or Basketball.

Toronto is a good school. If you want other options though, I’d suggest you look at a few other less competitive schools. Within Canada, it sounds like you’ve considered all the other options and Toronto is still your top choice. That’s great, because you’re in. Having that one in the bag is a big advantage. It lets you swing for the homerun. Looking for a less competitive, FAR more expensive program in the US might not make sense. It’s just important to know that most at bats are outs. You should be very prepared for that possibility. It sounds like you weren’t last year, hence the gap year.

Good luck!

I think the most important think to keep in mind is will I like, and thrive at, whatever school you will attend. If you go to Mudd, you will have to swim, and that’s very time consuming, and on top of that, it’s a very competitive school academically.

@eyemgh Yep, I took my chances at a high reach Ivy for EA last year, and gave up my ED at a couple schools, so I’m not making that same mistake again this year. Thanks for your comments.

@vhsdad I really like Mudd, much more than U of T, though do acknowledge it is hard. Interesting to note that swimming is one of the CMS sports that has heavy representation of Mudd students-- something like half of the team is students from Mudd. Don’t know if they’re geniuses or amazing at time management, but it’s definitely possible.

Mudd gives a great education, but it is known to be VERY rigorous. It might be a challenge to do a sport too.

@eyemgh Just updating you-- got admitted ED1 to Mudd (guess being recruited for swimming helped)! Very excited right now… thanks for the advice that you gave me in this thread, appreciate it.

Congrats! The beauty is, there’s no scholarships for D3 athletics. If the load becomes too extreme, you can step away from the pool without any financial ramifications. Congratulations!

Thanks for the update @CCThunderfin - fantastic news!!

@eyemgh Exactly, I can try swimming out first year and if it becomes too hard to handle, I can drop it. Thank you!
@OHMomof2 Thank you very much! I’m stoked!
