engineering UVa Vs Virginia Tech

I have to decide quickly , which one is better for engineering and also in terms of social life , campus etc..

tech. and i am not saying it to keep u out of uva. tech is much better for engineering

The ranking doesn't mean everything. I've never been to VT so I'm not sure about that, but I've taken some E-school courses at UVA, and the instructions were spectacular. The only negative thing about UVA E-school is that it is so hard to get a high GPA. From what I've heard UVA E-school's avg. GPA is somewhere between 2.3-2.7.

I would suggest you come to UVA since many engineering majors at the beginning end up changing their major into arts & sciences. There's no doubt that UVA is better at fields other than engineering; it would be better for you to leave options open unless you are firmly decided.

Social life: don't know about VT. Heard it's pretty good. UVA excellent.

Campus: I bet the UVA grounds cannot be less spectacular than VT's campus.

UVA>Tech. Enough said.

thnx for ur comments and uva also has further deadlines helps for procrastinators like me

but yeah mostly im decided on engineering the only thing i may change to is business or econ so UVa is much better than tech for those

last thing for engineering which one will be harder to get into ?

bump, i would like to know this too

UVA engineering is harder to get into.

FYI: UVA E-School's avg. SAT 1368, 84% were in top 10% of HS

damn... my chances are gone..

From what I heard when I attended a UVA engineering open house with a friend, UVA's engineering school has a more theory-based curriculum that is geared towards students heading to grad school. Tech's, on the other hand, is more preprofessional and the majority of students go straight into the workforce. UVA's students are, on average, better, and UVA is a better environment in which to spend four years.

"UVA's students are, on average, better, and UVA is a better environment in which to spend four years."

Agreed

Next year I could answer this question really well :) My daughter went to UVA (although for chemistry) & my son is going to VT next fall for engineering. I have heard the same about VT being a very practical curriculum & UVA being more theoretical. UVA's program is very small in comparison to Tech's, so you might consider that aspect as well. I actually wanted our son to go to UVA because our DD's experience there was so positive. We went to engineering days at VT last March & he loved everything about it - particularly the Ware Lab. The more laid back atmosphere probalby does suit him better. And the food is unbelievable. IMO if you might NOT end up being an engineer then UVA is hands down the better choice. If you're one of those born to be an engineer people, & you want to go right to work after your bachelors, then I'd say Tech. Average SAT for engineers at Tech is 1300.

Average SAT at Tech is 1260 for engineers, according to the information session i was at last year. I would have chosen UVA HANDS DOWN for engineering, it is just a better school in general, better overall education. I say I would have because I was accepted to Duke's Engineering School, Pratt. =) Early Decision.

I agree that the food is good at tech, but its probably good everywhere =)

If you look at the rankings Tech is tied at 19th while UVA is tied at 33rd. UVA
does not have a reputation for engineering.

It doesn't matter, the USNews rankings are BS. Overall, UVA is 22nd. Where is Tech, 70th or something? lol. UVA has better students, a better campus, better people, more prestige, and sometimes it rains gummy bears. Ok, maybe not that, but UVA>tech. If you get into both, go to UVA.

IMHO the downhome VTech kids are better people than the stuckup high stress overachievers at Uva. But the gummy bear thing is cool.

Sounds like Tech needs to get their numbers straight. We were told at "Engineering Days" that average for engineers is 1300. My other son went to U. Pitt & based on their food, I can guarantee you that the food is not good everywhere.

I searched and found this thread. I know this is from 6 years ago but can anyone say which one is better now?

The one that is better for you is the one that is right for you - you have to compare what you are looking for and go with where you feel you’d be happier and content. That’s the true basis on which to make a comparison - rankings and other people’s perceptions won’t tell you what you need for you.

My D does love UVA and the e-school but she also never considered VT, it just wasn’t where she saw herself. She went with fit and hasn’t regretted one thing.

Some of the engineering programs at Tech edge out some of the programs at UVA and vice versa. However, the differences are minor enough that you should definitely try to visit each school and try to decide for yourself. There are so many other considerations to think about: extracurricular opportunities, cultural and sporting events, food/dorm life, location, campus atmosphere, what you’re interested in minoring, etc. Make sure you’re not basing a 4-year decision on a small difference in rankings.
