Engineering @ UVA

question: i want to go into Biomed eng. and Tech doesnt offer it...but i was accepted to tech's engineering program...so i guess my question is tech's eng. program harder to get into that UVA?

I am also interested in the field of Biomed Engineering. I got into UVA and I am going there. I based by decision on the fact that UVA is more widely known and reputed, respected university than tech, although tech's engineering has lot of different facilities.

If you want to go to Biomed Eng, and if tech doesnt have it, why do you want to go there then, just b/c its harder to get into?

no no...lol...i havent been accepted into UVA, but i have been accepted into Tech eng...im just wondering since ive been accepted into Tech Eng. should i except or do i have a high chance of being accepted into UVA's Eng....forget about the whole biomed eng....im just wondering is it harder ingeneral to get into UVA eng. than Tech eng...or is Tech eng harder than UVA eng to get into..

I dont know much about VT stats for Eng, but here are some stats for UVA Eng:

SAT Math: Median is a 720
http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/data_catalog/institutional/data_digest/adm_math.htm

Sat Verbel: Median 660
http://www.web.virginia.edu/iaas/data_catalog/institutional/data_digest/adm_verbal.htm

Making the median SAT a 1380, which i think is pretty high, higher than VT, but if you see in the rankings for Eng School, UVA is behind VT

There's an old Joke about VT and UVA engineering

"Think about this: Next August, 500 kids will enter the e-school at UVA, and over 2000 will enter the tech college of engineering. What do they all have in common? They all got into tech."

stolen from the bowels of ye olde CC boards
http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?8/58987

He, he. It must be an "internet sixth sense" or something. I had not checked into CC in months, and just logged in to see that my joke from years ago was quoted. Thanks, gameguy, it's nice to be remembered.

(Actually, I got it from my son as he matriculated into UVA's engineering program.)

Read that whole thread. This UVA vs. VT argument will outlive us all. They are Virginia's two most prominent engineering programs.

Let me give you some information I noticed on biomedical engineering. I have a hypothesis about biomed eng--you will have to check this out since it may be your field. I believe that it is a popular major, but not a rapidly growing field. It appears attractive to HS students, and I think it's the engineering field most often cited as an area of interest. But reality, at the degree end of the education process, is quite different.

Want data? Check out the majors that employers ask for most and least. These are reported at UVA in the "survey of graduates". The career center publishes the pdf on their website. Biomedical engineering is the least-requested major.

Expect to go to med school? Check out how many UVA engineering majors go to medical school (in the same survey). Last I checked, it's in the single digits.

CC has some discussions on bio-engineering in the same archives. Those who have majored in this very specialized field have expressed some regrets.

If you're driven to do this, I don't want to dissuade you. You need to have a complete command of the career "facts of life" before you press on, however.

Engineering is a tough field. You will struggle through differential equations, statistics, computer programming, linear algebra, physics and chemistry. Why go through all that pain if there's no demand for your specific skill.

I'll be happy to answer any other engineering or UVA questions. My son is finishing his second year at the e-school. He's quite pleased with his choice, and, in fact, knows nobody who is unhappy with UVA.
