I am a junior in HS that is hoping to major in Mechanical Engineering at one of the following schools. I know my stats are not that great and I'd appreciate it if someone would chance me on any schools on my list that they are familiar with.

My Stats:
3.3 GPA UW
1350/1600 - 2000/2400 SAT
30 ACT
By the end of this year I will have 1 AP & 3 Honors
Scheduled next year for 3 APs & 3 Honors
Moderate ECs
Great recommendations
URM

Schools I'm considering:
Penn State U
Pitt
Ohio State
Miami of Ohio
Purdue
West Virginia U

Any help would be appreciated and any other colleges that you think I MIGHT be able to get into would be welcome. Thanks!

get it up to 3.5 GPA and as long as you have 700+ on SAT math, you might have chance at Purdue. (Although I don’t think that highly of Purdue but that’s the best school in your list)

CSmajor5… you have got to be a little more forgiving in your opinions of some schools. Not everyone will have the best credentials because honestly, high school is a bit of a joke and some people don’t feel it worthwhile to put forth so much effort. Yeah it sounds crazy, but not everyone will be hellbent on MIT. Besides that, Purdue is a good engineering school.

I hate to start yet another argument with you but for god’s sake, it’s annoying.

@OP: Purdue is the best school on your list, and if you try your hardest to get your grades up a little more even, you could make it. Purdue is a great school.

Also, if you’re feeling up to it, GT has a great transfer program so if you happen to have above a 3.0 after your first two semesters, you could apply there (with the proper required classes though, they have a list on their site). But of course, you have time to pull your GPA up, though that could be hard since you really have maybe one more semester (since this one is just about over).

Thank you CSmajor5 & hadsed!
I certainly want to get my GPA above 3.3 but it has taken two years to get it this “high”. My freshman year was a disaster and I ended up with a 2.6. After my sophomore year I was at 2.999 and now I’m “up” to a 3.3. Hopefully with my APs & Honors classes next year a few colleges (I will apply EA to as many as possible) will at least ask for my mid-year grades before rejecting me.

If I am not accepted by Purdue, do you guys think I have a shot at any of the other colleges on my list? Any others you’d recommend for Mehcanical Engineering? Thanks again.

there’s nothing you can do about past GPA. Just don’t look back, study hard, get your GPA higher and pray that you get into the schools applied to.

I suggest you to look at the UC system. They are great schools are they do not look at freshman grade, only soph and jun.

Purdue is relatively easy to get in. I have similar GPA(3.33UW) and lower SAT (1910), though I did have a lot more AP classes. I say Purdue and Penn State are the best 2 schools on your list. Look at UIUC and Virginia Tech as well.

I’m not an expert in engineering but I do know a little about the schools you are considering. I’d rate your chances as follows:

Purdue - slight reach
Penn State U - slight reach
Pitt - match
Ohio State - match
Miami of Ohio - match
West Virginia U - safety

While there may not be much you can do about your GPA this year, consider re-taking the SAT and ACT. Sometimes a higher score can help hide a GPA blemish. Good luck.

Sorry to bump this, but I’m retaking the SAT & ACT in June and if I can get my SAT above 2100+ (math 700+) or ACT up to 32-33, do you guys think I have a shot at Michigan or someplace else I haven’t considered? Thanks again.
