Engineering

What is the process for getting into the Rice engineering school? Do you first get into rice and then apply? I'm interested in engineering but I'm worried that if I indicate that on my general app, or mark down that i will be applying to the school of engineering, and they think I'm not engineering material, that I won't even be accepted to Rice at all. (I guess I could find this info on the common app.)

If you don't have to apply to engineering until after you're admitted then I guess that won't be an issue. If that is the case, then I have a similar problem relating to my interests on the common app. Math is probably the weakest part of my app, so should I say I just want to be an English major or something (my strongest subject) on the section regarding subjects of interest?

Thanks.

same question

Admissions are done holistically, not by school or department - so no, you don’t apply separately to get into the engineering school. This is really fantastic in that it makes it incredibly easy to switch majors as you please. As far as I know, they only request your potential field so they can get a general idea of who’s coming to campus, and so they don’t end up with an entire class of poli sci majors or something. Also, the engineering deparment provides full-tuition scholarships that they only give to people who mark “engineering” on their apps (albeit you have to stick with it…).

In short, NO, you will not be penalized. Be honest about your interests.

Alright, thanks! Good info.

silentsailor is correct. Other than the Music and Architecture school that require special admissions, you apply to Rice and get in. Once at Rice, you can major in anything (except Musi and Archi, of course)
