My son was accepted to Honors and Engineering. What is the Engineering (esp bioengineering/biomedical engineering) like at USC (esp given the "other" state school's known reputation for engineering). Also, how easy would it be to get an engineering internship? There is so much high regard for the Business school at USC. I don't see any threads on Engineering.

I know it’s pretty popular major for honors but don’t know many details…other than one of Ds friends in this and seems to like it. Maybe try browsing the website and fb pages for engineering to see what’s happening. Outside of internships through Eng. school, be sure to visit office of fellowships and scholars. Lots of great opportunities and the staff is beyond fabulous.

I don’t know anything about the engineering program at USC, and I understand perfectly what you are saying about the “other” college.

But, I would think that being accepted to the Honors College at USC would more than make up for any possible weakness in the engineering program at USC (not suggesting that there are any weaknesses, really don’t know). The Honors College at USC is “kind of a big deal”, probably just as much so as the International Business program.

My wife has a cousin who was an engineering student at USC, he graduated about 5 years ago, immediately got a job with a major engineering company and is making over $100k/yr.

I don’t know anything about biomedical engineering (though I have met a couple of people in that major), but the engineering department at USC, in general, is pretty good.

I thank all of you who replied to my question. I appreciate any tidbits since I am an anxious mom with very little understanding of engineering. But I am excited for my son re: Honors College and the recent #1 ranking in John Willingham’s Review of Public U Honors Programs.

My son is also Biomed Eng. He will be meeting with a girl from our town Friday night who has a good friend in BME, so hopefully will be able to get some info from him. Then he will attend Scholar’s Day on Saturday. Can’t wait to see where my son chooses.

We just returned from Scholars Day (we also attended the Honors College Reception yesterday) and feel very psyched about Honors College as well as the Engineering department. Professor Amber gave a fantastic humorous and charged up presentation that made me want to go back to college and do engineering. The engineering school has their own career office to help students get internships and jobs. It’s definitely a “smaller” school than the other state school, but I really believe these students won’t be lost in the big crowd and won’t be on their own. We also got consistent feedback from various students that research opportunities and funded internships won’t be such a challenge to find. My son will find out soon enough. The enthusiasm was contagious. Certainly USC will try their best to make a great impressions since so many kids there are still deciding. Most of the students attending today are from out of state. Half of Honors College students are from out of state will lend diversity to the dorm.
