I’m looking for safeties that have solid engineering programs.

I live in TN, so I’m looking for universities that are either in the South or in the Central areas of the US.

So, would Auburn be a good choice for an engineering safety?

White Male, OOS
34 ACT
3.96 unweighted GPA

I saw your post on the Univ. of Alabama thread as well. My son (and I) visited both Bama and Auburn and happened to like Bama much better. With your stats, you might consider Clemson for your safety in the engineering field. It has 14,000 undergrads (nice and big, but not huge) and is rated (see Prin. Review) as having very happy students and great quality of life. The ACC sports is pretty fun as well. Its avg. SAT score is about 150 points higher than Auburn's, and it is ranked a good bit higher (the university itself, not necessarily the engineering departments) in the U.S News rankings (to the extent you put much stock in that).

You are well within the non-resident scholarship range for Auburn. I would check their web site.

Auburn has an excellent engineering program, and consistently ranks as one the top schools in the nation for it. Auburn has the 3rd highest ranked engineering program in the south (I'm assuming behind Georgia Tech and another place, but I don't know the specifics). I encourage you to check out AU's college of engineering website for details. Here: Auburn Engineering

As a UA student I will admit that in terms of rankings for engineering...the other school that shall remain nameless might have us beat. But it isn't like they are blowing us out the water. UA does seem to be more generous with their money compared to our rival.

With your stats I would recommend Georgia Tech, don't settle for a sub par educaion.

College of Engineering at Georgia Tech

Excuse me, Auburn's engineering department is not "sub par". Georgia Tech is a great school and I know people who go there, but it's all where you fit the best. I would recommend this person to check out both schools: Auburn and GT. I know that some people like Auburn better because GT is 70+% male and there's less socializing there (people are very into their academics). At Auburn, it's about 50/50 split between male and female, and there's more of an socializing atmosphere (Auburn is NOT a party school though unlike some of the other big SEC schools which make the Princeton Review party school list every year). However, different things work for different people, so I would say to check out both and see which you like best.

Honestly, I have no idea what the engineering department is like at Alabama (it's a bit childish to say "that other school", don't you think?) but I was disturbed by the social life there, considering you pretty much HAVE to be Greek or you're a nobody, and also the lack of diversity and interaction between different ethnicities. The OP would also have no problem getting money from Auburn with his scores and GPA so that should not even be an issue. (Alabama gives out more money because they get more money than we do, from the state, etc.)

Well first of all GT is in the middle of Atlanta and theres always fun to be had there. I know since I lived there! I didn't mean to insult anybody by my comment, I was just stating that GT statistically has the best engineering program in the south east period, nationaly it's 4th overall as well. Good luck with you decision!

The OP was asking about an engineering safety. Not likely that Ga. Tech would be a safety (particularly without knowing much more about the OP).
