England's universities (how to get in)

what does it take to get into an English university (Oxford, Cambridge, Lse) and how do they compare you to english candidates cuz i kno they use a completely different system? also, do they provide interviews and how do the chances of getting into one compare to harvard, yale, penn, etc. thanx.

p.s. i want to study business but they dont have that major (i think) but the alternatives they offer were economics and management. i'd prefer the latter.

first step is checkin out their websites. btw you can only apply to either oxford or cambridge not both. I believe both schools base their decisions on GPA and SATS only, and i know oxford explicitly states that ECs are not even considered in admissions, so if you've got a high GPA and high SAT scores than go for it.

Hell if we know - Oll I-ie knowww is that theh ssschooouls in Ame(r)hica awe qua-ite supehrior.

hehe.

In England they have A Levels, which are like AP Exams. Usually people take 5 or 6 A Levels to get into competitive universities. You need something like five or more 5s in ur APs to get in. Also, make sure u right a good personal statement which is not like an American university essay..its different.. And yes, ECs aren't very important. Just make sure you get a high GPA

No...I've taken 3 A-levels and I've got into all six of my universities including Imperial and UCL.

Re OP - If your considering applying this year you've missed the deadline. All UK unis can be applied to thru UCAS (<a href="http://www.ucas.ac.uk)%5B/url%5D">www.ucas.ac.uk)</a>. It's like a Common App but for every single university. You can apply to a maximum of 6 courses. I'd advise applying to Oxbridge etc. only if you stand a decent chance at HYPSMC and Ivies and other top US colleges.

thanx for the responses. what should u say in ur personal statement?

bumpin sizhao's last question. Also, are there any good medical schools in England or Europe???

All universities have a med school. You can check the rankings at <a href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/section/0,,716,00.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.timesonline.co.uk/section/0,,716,00.html</a></p>

Re Personal Statement - This basically 2/3 about your major and why you would be a good fit for the major and their university. 1/3 abut your EC's, awrads and experiences.

You need at least 3 A-levels to go to an English college , but don't simply compare them to APs they are harder and longer , you need to do 6 exams for each A-level.

universities in england rarely give you an unconditional acceptance ,they will give you a conditional acceptance that is dependent on what you get on your A-levels. so you wont know if you are In until august when the marks come out.

Oxford and Cambridge usually ask for 4 A's or 3 A's and a B and sometimes they will ask you to come to england to interview.

A-levels cover material that is not usually taught in American high schools since high schools in england go up to grade 13 and undergrad studies last 3 years instead of 4.

I am currently studying to do 2 APs and one A-level and the A-level is MUCH harder. I did 3/6 parts of the A-level Business Studies last year and barely scraped a B(212/300). I also did AP Macroeconomics and scored a 5 with almost no effort.

My advice is if you are in an American high school go to an American college.

does anyone kno what the cost is to americans to go to college in england or scotland. also, how do u sign up to take and study for a levels if ur american?

All I know is one of my friends is now a freshman at Oxford, and had to go through a rigorous application process. I think she did one A-Level too, in French. She had a lot of APs though, and was exceptionally smart.

Oxford and Cambridge are quite expensive if I remember correctly.

Business Guy:

I looked into this about two years ago and, compared to US universities, Oxford and Cambridge were bargains! But, there's little or no financial aid. So, pick your poison.

As an International student if i study in the UK or US, I will be paying quite a frew k less in the UK.

I just checked tuition for Oxford. If I'm reading it right, it's 3,000 pounds/annum. Not too bad, really.

That 3,000 pounds is for a resident who has been resident in the UK for 3 consecutive years prior to attending university. Or, an EC citizen who meets the same residency requirement.

nat:

Thanks. What's the cost for out of the country? Do you know?

Oxford does not care about high school grades. Only standardized test scores, personal statement, interview and entrance test if applicable.

I just checked the Oxford university site. Overseas, non EC students would have to pay between 10,000 and 12,000 pounds plus room and board of approx 7,000 pounds. The rate of exchange is almost 2 US$ = 1 Pound. So its still competitive I think compared to Ivies but limited fin.aid available.
