English 103

From what I have read, if you qualify and complete E103, it counts as both E101 and E102. Is this true and does anyone know how much more is involved in it compared to E101?

If you qualify to take EN 103, and you complete it with the req’d minimum grade, then it will fulfil the Frosh Comp I and II req’t. I don’t know if you still only get 3 credits or not.

I doubt it’s harder than EN 102, it probably just quickly reviews some of the more basic Frosh Comp instruction… EN 101 probably goes more into depth with how to write a proper 3 para, 5 para essay, thesis statement, conclusion, doing proper citations, etc

EN 103 Advanced English Composition. 3 hours.

This is an accelerated freshman composition course that is open to students with minimum composite scores of 28 ACT or 1240 SAT, or minimum ACT English scores of 30 or SAT verbal scores of 720. With the appropriate qualifying scores and the completion of EN 103 with a grade of “C-“ or higher, placement credit is awarded for EN 101 and the general education requirement for freshman composition is completed. Expository writing. Topics to be determined by each instructor. Grades are reported as “A,” “B,” “C,” or “NC” (“No Credit”). A grade of “C-” is required as a prerequisite for advancing to another English course at The University of Alabama. EN 103 does not apply as credit to the English major or minor.

Thank you! And does anyone know anything about GBA 145? On my visit, I received a listing of the courses that are required for my finance/econ degree and GBA 145 was listed as a 1 credit strongly recommended course. Based on the course description it’s just getting you acclimated with the business school. Has anyone taken it or heard anything specific about it?

Send a pm to SEA_Tide…he’ll probably know.

My son took EN 103 his first semester and said it was a blast: The Rhetoric of Comics and Cartoons. Upon completion, he retroactively received 3 credits for EN 101, with a grade of P.

Is EN 103 always The Rhetoric of Comics and Cartoons? My son would LOVE that! (I thought EN103 was a composition class.)

No, not all of them. This last fall semester, these were the choices. Looks like they change each semester?

Also…I think En 103 counts as an Honors class for honors credit.

Thanks, Mom2. Malanai - do you happen to know who your son’s professor was for EN103? Sounds like a class/prof my son would enjoy.

(Just want to add…what cool, fun classes these kids have to choose from. Can I go back to college?)

Mom2 - where can I find that list that you posted above?

It’s on mybama…look up classes link. This was from fall semester.

Melissa Hull. She’s young but ,in my son’s opinion, the best teacher he had at Bama during the Fall 2010 semester.

Son took Eng. 103 in the first semester of his freshman year. His transcript is noted:

Eng. Composition I Eng. 101 Satisfied by Force Complete: Student has a (SAT Verbal score) covers 6 hrs. credit

Eng. Composition II Eng. 103

In the notes section:
student has a (SAT Verbal score inserted) covers 6 hours credit and covers EN 101 and EN 102

It was very much worth it for my son to have taken Eng. 103. He did very well and, because of his SAT Verbal and the grade he received in Eng. 103, he was able to take only one freshman English composition class instead of two. For an engineer where composition is not a critical class, he was able to free up the time to take something else.

My D had Melissa Hull this semester for The Story of Stuff. She said just about the same thing that Malanai’s son said. My D is not a big fan of English classes usually, but she really liked Ms. Hull, enjoyed the class, and, according to her professor, grew quite a bit as a writer  She HIGHLY recommends Ms. Hull.

JTownatp, GBA 145 is an introductory course to the business school. It is not required and to my knowledge, isn’t recommended for top students, especially those that already have a good idea of what they are majoring in. Some people like taking those types of courses though.

DS took Eng 103 with Professor Guenzel. It was much harder than he anticipated. I had a hard time advising him, too, because I am clueless about the latest MLA standards, which seem to be about a thousand times more complicated than they were in my day.

By the Grace of God (and yes, much grace was involved), DS got all As and A-minuses. He had a rough start to the semester (too much socializing, lol), but he pulled it out at the end. We are so relieved. Hallalujah!

Question - the classes titled Advanced English Comp - FLC - does this mean these are foreign language courses (for non-native English speakers)? Or something completely different? Is there an acronym guide for this?

I think it’s Freshman Learning Community.

How do you find out which FLC courses are linked?

That makes a lot more sense! I was looking at the course titles - some of them are designated FLC.

The FLC English Comp courses will be themed according to the particular FLC…very nifty!

I was just looking on MyBama and I didn’t see any EN 103 courses that said FLC. Is it somewhere else? Most of the courses are “Monsters: Natural and Unnatural,” but there are several that are different. Are those the ones that will be FLC courses? Since D is trying to work up a schedule, I want to make sure she doesn’t choose a class that won’t be available to her.

ETA: Never mind, I just noticed the FLC’s. I also noticed that some of the courses that had instructors listed before now say TBA. I guess this is a moving target.
