English and Classics

Can anyone tell me a little about how strong the english and/or classics departments are at Northwestern?

Thanks!

As far as I can tell, NU doesn't have a lot of weaknesses.
The English Dept is excellent. My daughter is seriously considering majoring in English. I believe Classics is good too, but haven't looked into it as closely.

thanks! Does anyone else know anything?

The English dept is ranked in the top-20 by US News graduate ranking. I don't know anything about the undergrad program and there's no undergrad ranking. US News doesn't rank classics.

Overall: 19th
American Lit. Before 1865: 12th
African-American Lit.: 17th
18th to 20th Century British Lit.: 18th

without being able to say how "good" the department is, i took a classics course last quarter with a bunch of juniors and can tell you that even though they might not have been friends outside of class, they all knew each other and there was a sense of bonding after having been through (and continuing) the program together, which at a school of 8,000 undergrads, was a nice thing to see

How is the classics program? Is it a strong major?
