English and Theater Interdisciplinary Major

I know some schools offer English and Theater as one interdisciplinary major and I am very interested in pursuing this. Which colleges offer this? I will be looking at moderately to highly selective schools. I know double majoring is an option but I would love a school that offers this as a single major.

If you are accepted into the acting program at Boston University you can choose an academic track that permits the kind of interdisciplinary work you describe.

Are you talking about something that combines Acting and English, or something like a more academic approach to theatre, say something like dramaturgy?

The latter. I am interested in playwriting and the academic study of theater.

Reed College: [Reed College Admission Office](http://web.reed.edu/apply/academics/is_dd_div.html#lit_theatre)

I would also suggest Sarah Lawrence

Are you thinking of a BA or a BFA? Conservatory or college or university?

Most conservatories offers degrees in Dramaturgy and/or Playwriting and/or Theater Arts. The Theater Arts degree can include some or all of the above, depending on the school. Some schools give you the option of designing your own Theater Arts degree. The Theater Arts degree is often (but not always) a BA. The others are more often BFA degrees.

A more traditional BA in Drama or Theater at a non-conservatory college or university is likely to include a substantial drama lit component as part of the degree.

Carnegie Mellon has a BHA degree (Bachelor’s of Humanities and Arts) that is interdisciplinary…it is not for students interested in performance, but is perfect for those wanting to combine their academic study of theater with the humanities. When I spoke to an admissions officer, he told me that the student creates the “major” by choosing an area in the arts and one in the humanities to study, but they must blend the two areas together so that by the time they graduate they must be able to explain the connections between the two areas…your interests are english and theater. it would be extremely easy to bridge these two areas of study to complete the BHA.
