English at St. John's

I was recently accepted to Saint John’s and received a very appealing financial offer, but I don’t know much about the school or the major I applied to, English. I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me more information about the university, and possibly touch upon it’s similarities/differences to Fordham?

Overall, and as a generalization, Fordham is a “better” school than St. Johns. That said, I know one kid who majoredin English there, then got a master’s in English lit there and then went to law school, but not St. John’s. He loved the school. In the NYC area, St. John’s grads get jobs, as do Fordham grads. St. John’s is in a better area than Rose Hill. All things being equal, if it would be cheaper to go to St. John’s than to a state school, go for it.

Thank you! St. John’s wasn’t on my radar, but it’s affordability is now making it stand it out among my other schools. Would you happen to know how it compares to research universities like the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia? These are more of my target/reach schools, and St. John’s more my safety, and was wondering how big of a disparity there would be between them.

May I ask how did you receive your acceptance letter? I have recently ED to St Johns but still haven’t heard back

I had an on-site admissions interview and acceptance at my high school last week.

For English . . .?

While the schools you mentioned are certainly excellent schools, to best make this decision, it’s good to know what you hope to do with your degree.

  • Literary?
  • Writing of some sort?

In general St. Johns U is a pretty solid school, but knowing what you hope to get out of your degree will help us figure out your best options.
