Starting to explore my options as a prospective English major, I admit I don't know much about UCLA and sort of applied on a whim, but was wondering if there was anything anyone could tell me about their English department. Good, bad, marginal? The extent of my knowledge: they host the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books every year, and that's about it.

UCLA's humanities program, particularly English, is quite strong. However, students say that the program is a very long one.

LA Times does host Festival of Books every year and it is an excellent event. I attended the event in my freshmen year in high school and that's when the love affair with UCLA began.

I went last year and look forward to attending again this year as well. Out of curiosity, who did you see? I saw Dave Eggers, T.C. Boyle, Ray Bradbury, Michael Chabon, and a few others.

i heard its good, but challenging. here you can read up on the english department for starters:

I went to go see Arianna Huffington, Robert Scheer, Mitch Albom, Ann Chi Min, Iris Chang (: sniff, she unfortunately committed suicide : Such an incredible historian too).

I can't wait to see Madeleine Albright this year. Or I might just have her as a professor in college...

(As you can see, I'm a political junkie).

Kfc4u: Thank you for providing a link...I tend to provide opinions and not facts...sometimes. (<-----this statement will come back and bite me in the rear end).

I saw Mitch Albom, Iris Chang, Ray Bradbury, and Alice Walker. Albom really surprised me by how young and humorous he was, but I think panel w/ Iris Chang was probably the most fascinating. It was pretty cool b/c afterwards, there weren't that many people at the book signing table from the authors in the China discussion, so my friend and I were able to talk with them for a bit. Also, I was writing a story on the festival for my school newspaper, and (without knowing that there's an actually procedure for press), just sort of went up to them and started asking them questions, and they were all very nice and answered me very thoroughly (and with all the eloquence of writers.) I have to say though, Iris came off as a bit condescending, but nevertheless, her death is truly unfortunate.)

Be ready to roll your eyes:

I heard there is a new English class at UCLA, UCI and UCSD for non-native English speakers.

Engrish.

Ba doom boom! ;)

I told you it was bad.

They already have Engrish immersion at UCI, if you know what I mean...

What is Engrish?
