I am interested in applying to UMich and so was wondering, how is the English major/department at UMich? And what distinguishes the English department at UMich from other universities?

Thanks

In addition, how is the UNDERGRAD English dept since I assume the grad dept is quite good?

SilverBandCry, here's a list of 30 colleges and universities I am told have excellent English departments for undergraduate education:

Amherst College
Bennington College
Brandeis University
Brown University
Carleton College
Columbia University
Cornell University
Dartmouth College
Duke University
Harvard University
Haverford College
Johns Hopkins University
Middlebury College
Oberlin College
Pomona College
Princeton University
Reed College
Stanford University
Swarthmore College
University of California-Berkeley
University of Chicago
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
University of Pennsylvania
University of Virginia
Wesleyan University
Williams College
Yale University

You really cannot go wrong at any of those schools.

I would look at Bennington as their teaching style is more relaxed and catered to the english department....after all Theodore Roethke ended up working there just for that reason.

Last year I had a student-teacher in English who was attending Columbia Teacher's College (which is one of the premier education schools in the country) and she got her undergraduate degree from UMich. Other English teachers in my school that went to the Teacher's College went to Yale, Cornell and UVa for undergrad English. Like Alexandre said, there are several schools with great undergrad English departments, and several Liberal Arts Colleges too.

Good luck in deciding!
