I'm currently a wash u premed entering sophomore year and i need to take an english class to fulfill my med school requirement (i placed out of writing 1 since im in engineering).

any thoughts on an easy english class? would appreciate help from upperclassmen and/or graduates. Thanks!

Couldn’t you just go ahead and take writing 1 anyway? From everything I’ve heard, it’s an easy enough class (I tested out as well).

I know a few rising sophomore BME’s who have to take it as a sophomore (they didn’t test out) since it couldn’t fit in their freshmen spring schedules, so it doesn’t matter that you’d be a sophomore in writing 1.

well with the sophomore engineering schedules (along with organic chem as i am premed) writing 1 will be really time consuming (plus the difficulty depends on your instructor…i have some friends who ended up with really tough graders who didn’t give out grades better than an A-)

^ I think the premed req is a full year of english/writing- tech writing only covers half of that full year then, and a semester is still needed.

Only students in certain divisions can test out of Writing 1 though… it’s not possible at all for ArtSci (for my year, anyway…). Actually I had a pretty good semester in Writing 1 (I had a really good TA though) so maybe you could use your seniority to get into a good section of writing 1, as opposed to waiting for all the freshmen to sign up?

As far as other classes i could recommend… by “english” does this have to be in the LA department? in the English Composition/Literature department?

is Writing 1 mandatory for first semester freshmen?
right now my schedule looks like:
MBB, Calc, Chem (w/ lab)

For 12 credits, so I need a fourth class to hit at least 15. I was thinking of continuing my language (chinese) or just taking writing 1 if I need it later anyways. Do most freshmen take 4 or 5 classes? 15 or 18 credits? I want a fun schedule that isn’t too heavy so i can really do well in my classes, but at the same time I don’t want to feel like i’m cheating myself by not being brave and signing up for another class.

There is a technical writing class for engineers, although (unless you’ve tested out of Writing 1) I think engineers have to take both writing classes…

@nooob - There’s no reason you have to take Writing 1 first semester I don’t think. Depending on what you’re studying and stuff, there’s usually one semester they’ll recommend over another, although I don’t think they’ll force you to go with that. and yeah, 15-18 credits is about right. 18 would be a bit busy, but you might like having some room to cut back a few credits second semester, too.

FYI, my registration info packet (I’m architecture) told me a few required courses for the fall semester, but told me I was to sign up for Writing 1 for and only for the Spring 2010 semester.
