Hi,

I'll be attending Berkeley next fall and I have some questions about the English classes that I'll be required to take. I'm going to be going into engineering so I see that there are only two English classes that I will be required to take. What do you do in these English classes? Do you actually read novels or just write expository essays?

This year I'm taking AP English Literature and I usually get A's on our essays but I don't do very well on book tests. I usually get C's on our book tests. Will I struggle next year or will my writing skills still allow me to get A's in the English classes that I will be required to take?

Thanks!

In reading and composition courses, you read books and write about them. Each instructor has a different reading list, so it is best to see if instructors’ reading lists are on the department web sites so that you can choose the courses with the reading lists most interesting to you.

4 on AP English language or literature fulfills the A course, while 5 on AP English literature fulfills the A and B courses, except in the College of Engineering, which allows only the A course to be fulfilled with AP credit.

What are the midterms/final exams usually like?

This varies depending on the class. For my R&C class there wasn’t any midterms just essays to write. I believe I only wrote 2 or 3 essays over the course of the semester. AP English class should be able to get you out of the R&C A but you still have to do R&C B. You should check your classes and their ability to AP out to make sure. As for whether or not you will be ready, this really depends on the level of your AP class difficulty and the particular class you’re in. English is quite subjective and hard to give a certain definitive answer.

Wow. All these rules and regulations that apply to AP scores become confusing. Are there admission counselors you can talk to before enrolling in the courses? When do you actually start enrolling your class schedule for fall term?
