I'm in the middle of my first quarter at a CCC (De Anza College), and have a pretty specific question about the English course I'm taking. I got a 4 on the AP English exam, and so I was cleared to take more or less whichever English class I wanted. I chose EWRT 1B Reading, Writing and Composition.

Now, checking assist.org, EWRT 1B isn't listed as fulfilling IGETC requirements, but it IS listed as a UC transferable course. So. I'm not sure what to do - should I take EWRT 2 next quarter, which apparently does fulfill IGETC's requirement for an English critical thinking course? I was planning to take 1C to fulfill the composition course requirement, but that isn't listed either - do I have to go back and take 1A instead?

I know that this is a really specific problem, and I'm planning on talking to a counselor at school on Monday. It's just that I was hoping to get my classes sorted out over the weekend, so I'm throwing it out for anyone who might be at De Anza too and understands this better than I do. I'm not really expecting any help, but thank you SO much if you can.

I was in the same exact situation at De Anza last year and I took EWRT1B and panicked when I saw it wasn't on IGETC but I was told if it is listed as a UC transferrable course, it will transfer. I didn't think 1B would transfer so I am taking EWRT1A honors right now, but when I saw that 1B was a transferable course I felt like it was overkill for me but I figured better safe than sorry. If I were you I would take EWRT 2 next quarter, that's what I'm doing at least. Also keep in mind that I only got a 3 on the AP exam so I wanted colleges to see a grade for 1A instead of just a lousy 3 in place of what could possibly be an A in 1A. So basically, you should be fine and done with your english courses for UCs if you take EWRT2 next quarter.

Thank you! I wasn't actually expecting any replies because my problem was so specific, so this was really nice and helpful.

I did the same thing as you and then ended up at taking ewrt 2 online

and to answer your question 1b did transfer over to UC

You have to keep in mind that you are discussing two different requirements.
• IGETC – Not required by the UC system for admissions. It is accepted to fulfill your lower division general education requirements if you satisfy the IGETC and some campuses, colleges or majors might highly recommend you complete or not complete IGETC.
• UC Transfer Requirements – These requirements are necessary to transfer to a UC School.
A course might be UC Transferable and meet UC transfer requirements but not meet IGETC. Similarly a course might meet IGETC requirements but not UC requirements. If you want to complete both make sure to work with your advisers at De Anza to schedule your courses appropriately.
