I'm applying for Fall 2014, and was wondering by what time should I have completed the English courses? I'll be taking one in Winter 2014 and another in Spring 2014, I read/heard that English courses should I have been completed by Fall 2013!? Is it so? Will this badly hamper me? :(((

Yes, colleges strongly prefer applicants with grades in English by fall, you will be at a disadvantage to students who have already taken these classes especially since you haven’t completed a single one yet

Technically, there’s no evidence that the UCs care that you haven’t completed English classes by the end of Fall. The only one I know of that has ever expressed any preference is UCSB. All of the other UCs don’t seem to mind if you complete the classes in spring. But they definitely must be completed by spring.

It’s a common misconception that’s been floating around these forums for a long time despite the small amount of evidence available to support it.

The reason for this is because your 2 transferable English classes, along with your transferable math course, is pretty much an baseline absolute requirement for admission. If they don’t even have a grade for your first English transferable course, how can they know that you’ll even pass the 2nd one?

Again, there isn’t much evidence of people being rejected from the UCs, OTHER THAN UCSB, because they didn’t complete these courses by the end of fall. Furthermore, it wouldn’t be fair to deny admission to these kinds of applicants because they didn’t satisfy an admissions requirement that isn’t even official.

The evidence:
[Deadlines for completing courses | UC Admissions](http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/requirements/deadlines-courses/index.html)

So, no, completing your English and Math courses for regular transfer admission into UC is not required, but it is recommeneded to complete them as early as possible.

The only actual requirements to be eligible to apply to a UC are:
–Complete 60 semester/90 quarter units by the end of the spring term before articulating the following fall with a 2.4 GPA.

–Complete the 7-course pattern by the end of spring term before articulating the following fall: [Seven-course pattern | UC Admissions](http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/glossary/seven-course%20pattern.html)

The “completing English and Math courses in the fall preceeding to enrollment in a UC” requirement is for TAG applicants, depending on the UC campus for which they are submitting a TAG for.

Basically: if you’re submitting a TAG, then chances are you are required to have UC-E and UC-M complete by the end of fall. If you are applying through regular transfer admission, then you do have until spring to fulfill those requirements.

yeah, TAG applicants will need to complete them by fall. I’m just tired of people repeating this unsupported claim that this applies to everyone else who wants a decent chance at getting admitted to the UC of their choice.
