English Department/Major

From what I've read about Rochester, it seems like it's most well known majors are Political Science, Psychology, Engineering and the sciences. I was wondering how strong is the English department and major at UR. Thank you.

hey in terms of national rank, I can't give you exact numbers, but we have an amazing department. We have a diverse staff from have the preeminent Blake scholar Professor Eaves, to a great creative writing department lead by respected poet and Professor James Longenbach and fiction writer Johanna Scott. If you specific questions about the department feel free to pm me, Im a major and know about most of the professors and classes here.

Daughter is a math major but took a british lit course last semester. Enjoyed it very much, for what it's worth.

My D is a chem-e major but took a Chaucer course freshman year and loved it - prof was demanding but it was worth it.

Thank you all very much for your feedback. UR hasn't been on my daughter's radar screen up until now, since she's thinking about majoring in English. However, she's considering visits to several other upstate NY colleges, so it might be well worth it to check out Rochester, since they apparently offer merit aid, as well. Thanks again.

To me Rochester was a place where the NBA Royals once played hoops. Then D won the social science award, had a great visit, and also won a Rush Rhees merit award a little later.

It was all very good.
