English guy coming to the states - help me out

Sup peeps!

im and English guy and im currently studying American studies (History/current affairs) and film at Sussex Uni in England!

In my third year (Just finished my first) im goin to a U.S University for a year and just have some questions really!

1)what the hell sorta Uni should i go to!!!! i dont know anything about U.S Uni's! i like football (Soccer) and abit of tennis but im not really great at em (Prefer watching) so i dont think i'd fit in at a proper sport orientated Uni?

2)Can i get a fake ID easily? - in england the legal age in 18 so i have been going out regulary and getting wasted on a regular basis! when im in the U.S i'll be 20 so i dont know if i will be able to make it!!!!!!!!!

3)will i be accepted by you wonderful people??

any help will be appreciated

peace

1) Check out www.princetonreview.com. There are lists of different types of schools and summaries of America's top colleges.

2) I don't drink, so I honestly have no idea about fake IDs, however I do know that most people find their way to alcohol if they want it in college. So, if you absolutely can't do without...

3) Provided you don't have any particularly offensive personality flaws, I'm sure you will have no problems fitting in.

Lulz at this post.

Um.

1- Is there an option? Like, is there an established study abroad program at your school with specific partner schools? I assume that there is?

2- Um. Depends on where you end up and who you meet. Most of the partying that goes on at schools here are in dorms/private apartments so no worries, lots of readily available binge drinking without any id needed.

3- Accepted as in, will people welcome you? Probably. You're a novelty. People love that.

oh don't worry about fitting in. You're English. Everyone will looooooove you. it doesn't hurt to be hot of course, but the accent should do the trick ;)

^That too.

You'll be surprised how many drunk American sorority girls think English accents are sooooooooooooooooo exotic.

^ that's exactly what I was thinking. Everybody loves an englishman.

well people dont call me brad pitt for nothing hahahahaha jokes....i'd say more colin farrell.....lol

K. Well lets hope that the accent wins them over.

Cuz uh.

Nevermind.

i have got options but its most of the big Uni's from around the U.S e.g 8 in cali alone! (i think theres about 50 to choose from)

i might not need a fake ID obviously but i was wondering because im not sure if people go clubbing all the time (like they do in England) or whether its more about house parties etc? in the U.S can you stll go to clubs and pubs being underage? as long as you dont drink alcohol?

im not saying will i be accepted coz im a loser, i mean because im an englishman? seems i will though waheeeeeeeey hopefully i'll get my freak on! jokes

Lol at "jokes". Oh, the English are funny.

Well, I'm glad you have options. I suppose it just depends on where you want to go, then?

The fake ID thing really depends on the area. Some places have cracked down on fakes lately, and some places it's much easier (NY and LA are both generally not too bad, from what I hear). But really, especially if you're going to a school that's not in a metropolitan area, it will largely be house parties. Even at UCLA there are lots and lots and lots and omg too many house parties. So yeah. Most places won't let you in if you're underage with no id. This is less true if you're female, but you're not. So don't count on it.

And Yeah. The acceptance thing has been covered.

why laugh at the "jokes" remark hahahaha well it seems us english are indeed very different when it comes to vocab! i'll make sure i teach you americans some English slang when im there hahahahaha!

Awesome news about the house party thing! in a way i think they are far better than clubs anyway because you can chat etc far more!

i really cant wait to go tho! i love alot of American culture (e.g hip hop music - good stuff, not gay-unit etc) and hollywood etc obviously! so i really cant wait to get there and sample some real american culture first hand!

i was told by a mate who is half american to stick to the coasts because central america can be kinda boring??????? ideally i want to be in a city/state which is urbanised and fun! im not really up for vast deserts and forrests on my year abroad as i can visit those on my holidays when i do sight seeing.

and whats the deal with spring break? i see it in the movies but what exactly is it?? if an episode of family guy serves me correctly, it seems pretty hectic!

where you go really depends on what kind of atmosphere you want... northeastern or west coast are your big options. There are some great cities in the midwest though. Chicago for example. New York is of course the really traditional big city... noisy, fun, public transportation, the works.

If you go somewhere like LA, you still have access to a city, but it's more laid back. A lot of Mexican culture as well.

What level of academics are we shooting for, here? Ivy league?

Lol omg. You are amazing.

I am of the opinion that, yes, the midwest is boring. I am also hugely biased, though. I think if you're looking to get an American college experience while still being able to go out and "sample American culture", larger coastal cities are probably the way to go. Chicago is an exemption, but it's still in the midwest so meh. That's not to say that other schools/areas are complete wastelands. It's just that there really isn't as much to do and I'd think that you want to make the most of your time here experiencing lots of things.

And spring break is just that...a break. People do with it as they please. For some this means going somewhere like Mexico and being stupid. For others, it might entail enjoying the fact that you dont have class for a week or two. Spring break, like college in general, is what you make of it. And it probably won't be the way it seems in movies, because nothing ever is. This goes for family guy, too.

*I'm really hoping that family guy isn't your only model for what it's like to be an American. If it is...oh god help us.

A lot of mexican culture in LA???

Where??

No seriously.

LA doesn't strike me as being very Mexican, other than the availibility of more authentic Mexican food, perhaps. At least not more than any other culture.

erm i dont know mate???

i got good grades this year so guessing i get the same grades next year it would mean i average a 2:1 (second highest english grade you can get - not sure how yours works - ours is a 1, 2:1, 2:2, 3)

i just want to go to a uni which has a very good party atmosphere which is preferably on the coast - cali seems cool but are there any others which are really good for just enjoying yourself?

since i will be 20 i want to stay away from Uni's that revolve around going out on the town as i wont be able to get into clubs!

hahaha allie, family guy isnt my only model! i have the simpsons, arrested development scrubs and the chappelle show too hahahahahaha

cheers for all the info dude your sucha help!

so your saying cali is prob my best bet?

Well I assume that the grade thing matters less since you're doing it through a study abroad program. Usually as long as you're above a minimum you can go to any of the schools in the program. It's not like you have to apply to the individual school itself and then get in. You're already in.

i guess it was just california in general then :) When I visited I thought there was, but then I'm from Missouri, so i guess it was just a lot of culture in general

Oh, and if you want to fit in, you'll have to get a facebook.

Well, I think that some schools in California fit what you're looking for pretty well, but even then it REALLY depends on which school. UCLA and UCB are HUGELY different experiences than UC Riverside or UC Santa Cruz.

look who's here!! HAHAH...suuup dude??!

americans love english accents. you'll settle in well!
