English Language Discussion

Dude, a 4 in Lang is good. Some of the smartest kids I know got 4's. It's definately alot harder than USH or Calc. At least for me and my friends.

I got a 2 on the English Language exam, but I know I can still try and pass the AP Lit test. Even though I didn't pass English Language, I passed U.S. History with a 3 and Spanish with a 4. The irony of it all is that I felt most prepared for the English Language exam and least prepared for the other exams.

sfboy, i got the same exact scores!!! ('cept im waiting on a late us govt one)... when i got the email i thought i was reading what i had wrote, lol... pretty cool...(i got a 2eng,3ush,4span...lol :))

lol...that's cool, at least i'm not the only one. I haven't asked other kids in my class what they got, but I have a gut feeling a ton of people didn't pass. I didn't think it was gonna be that hard

I really enjoyed the essays, especially the argument, because it allowed me to use some profanity and write humorously. Multiple choice wasn't exactly memorable. My school doesn't offer this class, I just took it on a whim (and to get out of writing in college) and got a 5. I took the AP Lit class this year though, and that really helped.

Oye vey, does anybody know exactly what the essays were about again (like, what kinds of questions they posed and their subj. matter)?

I really don't understand how I got my score (it was good, a four-- and I was really surprised!) and I'm not saying this because I'm an overachieving prick who likes to defeat the purpose of their self-incriminating rant. I was under the impression that I did really bad (you know, typical sick feeling in the stomach after testing), but wow.

Also, can somebody explain how they curb the AP tests? A friend was trying to explain this to me earlier, but I'm as dumb as a 3x5 when it comes to these sort of things.

Res_Nullius,
Flamingo essay- What were the woman's views on American culture?
Money essay- Author's view on money, I think
Last essay- More about American culture and the media and whatnot...

I only got a 3...You people think a 4 is bad? I thought I had a 4, but no...a miserably 3...

I hated the Flamingo essay, *** was it alll about? I saved it for last though.. I had no idea what to write about it. I know there was probably some 'underlying' concept that I didn't write about, oh well.

I LOVED the 3rd essay, definitely did really good on it and the 2nd essay wasn't too bad, did pretty good.

The underlying message in the flamingo essay is that materialism has pervaded American culture, etc. The flamingo represents materialism, which had "splashed into the 1950's". I think my thesis was composed of the author's use of flamboyant words to reflect that era, the use of the flamingo as an overarching analogy, and the use of verbal irony to hint at the flaws in such a culture. So basically, just rant on about materialism versus romanticism.
The third essay was pretty common/boring as well.
The Hazlitt sentence threw me off for awhile because I focused too much on its mechanics, but not the actual content.

I think I'm the only person who really liked the Flamingo essay. I seeped Gatsby into it because of the insubstantiality of materialism and because I freaking love Gatsby. God bless him. :)

The second one I didn't like as much but that's because I think there were THREE PERIODS TOTAL and run-ons make me schizo. I know it was style and they did that intentionally and all that but I can't help it. I'm hopeless XD Other than that, I thought the prompt wasn't too bad.

The third essay threw me bahhhh. The ambiguity left me floundering. It probably was because it was the last one but wow, I was just making things up as I went along haha. I was pretty braindead at that point; I think the third one wouldn't have been as bad for me if it were at the beginning while everything was still fresh. But whatever. I managed a 5 so I guess there is something to making stuff up off the top of your head XD

I ended up getting a 5, but I went in to it very nervous.

I think that I did a very strong job on the MC and on the flamingo essay. I felt very proud of myself on that one. It was all about superficiality and trying to out do your neighbors. I felt especially proud of noticing the irony in the title "The Pink Flamingo: A Natural History."

Haha...

Anybody else laughing, or is this just me? Okay, I am a nerd, but my five tickled me pink!

same with me galo....i came in shaking and thinking i would get a 2 or 1, but somehow I got a 4. I think it was a mixture of luck and easy grading. For those who are surprised they didn't do well, I recommend you purchasing your free response packet ($8) and comparing it with your friends or other CC'ers (who I'm assuming did better).

I also got a 5. I didn't omit any MC and was pretty confident on all of my MC. I also finished the essays in time, so I'm really happy with my score. Especially because I self-studied.

I too actually liked the flamingo. I talked a lot about America being a land of competition and purchasing, superficiality, etc w/ the Flamingo a symbol of our need to buy and be a part of something. Oh and I remember ending it really well by saying something like:

"It seems as if during the 1950s, the flamingo surpassed the bald eagle as our nation's symbol." (or something like that)

I REALLY like that ending!

Congrats! That sounds like the perfect ending!

Thanks so much. I appreciate the compliment :) I thought the flamingo essay was the most fun. I hated the $ one on the other hand.

No kidding! I hated the second essay, but to tell you the truth, I think that the third one would have sunk me. It isn't like I didn't practice writing open ended questions, but I was tired (no excuse) and I just bombed it (or so I thought).

But it's all over now.

THANK GOD!!!!

I got a 4, but I was sure that I would get a 5! I thought this was the easiest AP. All you need to know is what some literary terms mean and practice some TWs.

I thought I'd get a 4, and I got a 3...I'm very disappointed. I had gone the opposite way with the flamingo essay, though. That probably did it to me.

I completely misunderstood the flamingo passage. I didn't read into it, and instead talked about the way the author phrased certain sentences and stuff. Completely missed irony, superficial, etc. My other essays and MC must have been spectacular. I got a 5.

haha, ok, NO ONE can talk about being tired until you hear my situation. We were in our final weeks of our school musical (what's known as "tech week" in theater lingo). Anyways, we had about 6 consecutive rehearsals the days before that, INCLUDING the weekend previous to the test....and all were late nights. Needless to say, I was sooooo burned out, it was ridiculous. Halfway through the year, by fairly established AP teacher told me that he had absolutely no worries about me, and that I was already ready for the AP Exam....yet somehow, i feel like I totally sucked on the test. I guess we'll find out today when I get my scores (because MA is like, the last state to get them!)
