English Language or Literature?

I know my high school offers both English Language and Composition AP and English Literature and Composition AP. I was wondering about the difference between the two and whether or not colleges saw one in a better light. My biggest strength in English (which is my weakest subject in the first place) is probably reading and my writing is my worst area. I know choosing literature is the no-brainer about I’m worried about the aforementioned questions and the composition part. Which one would you suggest?

Both courses are about reading stuff and then writing about what you read. They're different in their approaches to interpreting what you read.

I haven't taken Lit yet, but it seems to be moreso about understanding ideas and representations and allegory and stuff. Lang is about how rhetoric is employed to convey different theme and such.

lit = uber amounts of poetry. more abstract

language = lots of analyzing of passages. a little more formulaic

AP English Language is completely nonfiction. Just to let you know.

^^Please tell me that was some sort of sick, sick joke -.-

Language is mostly analyzing rhetoric and non-fiction essays. Sounds kind of boring, but it was definitely the best class I've ever taken, and I usually prefer fiction to non-fiction.

I'm taking Lit next year. From what I understand, the difference is that for Language you're studying style and that's what the exam is about, but for Literature there's a reading list and you'll need to write about specific books you'll have been expected to read during the course on the exam.

I would take Lit over Language. I took Lang Junior year and will do AP lit next year.

I took Language Junior year and then Lit my senior year.

Language is nothing but analyzing the different strategies - style, tone, etc. Lit is based more on the text, what is the authors attitude, what is being portrayed. Lit was also more writing, more writing that was more invovled.

AP english lit was the best class I took in HS.

As far as I know, Lang is for juniors and Lit for seniors. And amw06 was right...Lang is typically nonfiction. It wasn't a bad class, though I had it the first year it was ever offered at my school and so the teacher hadn't broken away from the usual 11th grade English curriculum yet. So I still read Grapes of Wrath, Huck Finn, and the Great Gatsby. And he didn't prepare us very well for the AP test so I probably bombed it. Mastering rhetorical strategies isn't easy.

But I'm REALLY REALLY looking forward to Lit b/c it's taught by one of my favorite people in the world - she's SO amazing!

I think AP Lang is best because it's so useful--learning rhetorical fallacies and how to analyze style, tone, and mood, along with other things such as syntax, diction, and detail are invaluable skills for high school and college IMO.

lit is harder aka more prestigous

AP Lang was one of the best classes I've taken in high school.

did you just call an AP class 'prestigious'?!

I was about to argue with you, but I figure anyone that posts 12+ times a day must just look for arguments to join.

Dude, seriously. You have no right to mock Drew00. Calling AP Lit prestigious is worthy of derision.

And, on a sidenote, I take personal offfense to that 12+ posts per day comment. It was not called for.
