English major alternatives.

I'm currently at a community college nearing graduation and it's time to seriously decide on a major. I'm big on writing and am trying to find a viable major that would improve on my skills. Thing is, I can't seem to find something (other than English) that isn't tied to a specific job that isn't dying.

Do you guys have any suggestions? I'd love to work in the non-profit or governmental sectors. Even Political Science would be interesting, but I know that's a pretty limited field for jobs as well. I just really need something that ties in to writing but isn't going to hamper job searches once I get the degree. Would majoring in English with a minor in Mass Communications help matters at all?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Mechanical Engineering or Finance. I hope you already took math/physics/chemistry/programming classes. There’s alot of writing, of numbers, in Mechanical Engineering.

Technical Writing is one possibility.

Another approach is to think in terms of a cluster of coursework, internships, etc. that incorporates your stated interests: For example, Writing—Rhetoric/Speech—Public Relations—Politics (elections, campaigns, political communication, etc.).

Also, it would be useful to add some coursework in digital media to your coursework in writing.

English Literature
English Compostion
Creative Writing
Technical Writing
Journalism

That was actually a really big help, zapfino. Thanks!
