English major at UW?

I’m an OOS student interested in teaching English for high schoolers or higher. I know UW is known for its wonderful STEM program and the rigor of them. But, how’s the English department? How hard is it to be accepted and how do English majors feel among the sea of STEM majors?

According to the UW website, “In fall 2017, 41 percent of UW students were pursuing at least one science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM) major.”

That is a relatively high percentage, but most students at Washington are not pursuing a STEM major. Like other top flagships, Washington’s departments are solid across the board.

Washington has had an excellent (and large) Department of English for many decades.

The UW’s College of Education also offers undergraduate programs:

Good luck!
