First of all I am not what you would consider, gifted when it comes to grades or SAT scores. The only thing I have been gifted with is imagination, art skills and a passion for writing. I wanted to ask all those out there for what colleges they might suggest for someone like me.

Here be the stats:
-Class Rank: 80/168
-3.2 GPA
-1600 SAT

Yup, I am nothing special when you look at me as a pile of numbers. Nonetheless, I would love to hear from some of you people about colleges you would suggest.

Most of the schools with great writing programs would be out of your reach. But any state U will have a decent english department and so much of creative writing is your work and how you take criticism that it shouldn't matter.

UNC-Greensboro (which would not be out of reach for you) has a very strong English and creative writing dept (also offers an MFA in CW). NC State Univ, not really known for its English Dept, also has a strong English Dept and offers a Creative Writing MFA. (NCSU also has an excellent Design School.) Don't know if you're male or female, but Hollins College in Va (still all female, I think) has turned out some amazing writers-- very strong creative writing. Also, Warren Wilson College, in Asheville, NC is very strong in creative writing.

UC Santa Barbara has a college of creative studies that includes a writing emphasis. You have to submit a portfolio to get admitted to the CCS program. It may be worth investigating. I remember reading about a student here on CC who got accepted into the program with lower than average UCSB stats.

I have been looking into the colleges all of you have suggested. Many of them seemed to have rather strong departments for what I am looking for.

Just wanted to say thank you to those rather have helped me so far. :)

So glad that students are becoming more aware of Hopkins outstanding writing program. It really is fabulous, as is its top-ranked history of art department.

bennington has got a good creative writing dept. from what i hear but it's very small, so i don't know if that would bug you but it's a great school that seems to look past numbers

I would second Hollins (I applied and stayed overnight and it's a great place! It was a tough choice for me to make), and would recommend looking at Sweet Briar, which has a CW program as well. Both are still women's colleges.
