I would like to major in English and lately I've been entertaining the thought of attending law school after graduation. I know English is a popular subject to major in for prospective law students. I'm wondering which track (creative writing or literature) would make my application more attractive to a law school. Personally, I think I would enjoy creative writing slightly more than literature, however something tells me literature would seem more 'professional' to a graduate school, please correct me if I'm wrong. In fact, the school I will be attending in the fall, SUNY Geneseo, actually requires 40 credit hours to complete the degree for English with a creative writing track, while a literature track only requires 36. Does this make a difference at all?

Law school does not care what you major in. Choose whichever one you think you would enjoy more, learn from, and, most importantly, yield a near perfect GPA. Law schools do not look at your course schedule. The ONLY things they really care about:

-GPA
-LSAT

And internships would be a plus. Personally, I’m a prospective English major and I don’t think it really matters which track you choose because you can always take plenty of classes in the other. Good luck and half fun at Geneseo.

I don’t think it matters at all. At Geneseo, the creative writing track overlaps considerably with the literature track anyhow. For law school, it’s important to learn to write lucid expository prose; either track will have you doing a lot of this for most of your courses.

I’d like to add to a previous post:

Law school look at.

1) LSAT
25) GPA
26) Everything else

LSAT really is the determining factor for law school. And you better be sure to get into a tier 1 otherwise it isn’t worth it. Would you be happy with a english major and a rejection from law school? Consider that.

1) LSAT
25) GPA
26) Everything else

^ this, just this!

dont worry about what you major in, however a 4.0 in underwater basket weaving beats a 3.99 in Rocket Surgery any day when it comes to law school… and dont even bother with extra curriculars or volunteering… just take the best LSAT courses and start early, and keep a high GPA.
