I just completed my freshman year of college, and I've taken a few English classes. My major is English: Writing emphasis, and I plan to take a few publishing classes for my major. With this major, do I have a realistic chance of getting into publishing? I plan to do internships in publishing, as well. Any suggestions? Is this the right major? Should I be double majoring with something else? Grad school?
In my future, I want to write, obviously, and work in a publishing company. I can change my major and still graduate within four years, if need be.

I don’t have any concrete answers for you, but I’m about to go into my freshman year of college and I’m majoring in English with a focus in Creative Writing and I, too am looking to get into publishing (and hopefully write on the side)

I was told by an English professor at my college that I was on the perfect track for working at a publishing company and she said she’d have no problems pulling some strings and getting me an internship at a publishing company in New York City for next summer.

I don’t plan on double majoring in anything and as for grad school, I think that depends on how far up in the business you want to go- but I really don’t know.

What I did was I looked up publishing companies online and went to their careers page and looked at their requirements. All I saw was a Bachelor’s in English. Unless you want to work for Scholastic- they want to see some sort of degree in Education as well as English.

Thanks so much! This helps :)

Internships are so important! Next summer (or even in the winters) try to see what you can get. You’ll need to apply for a lot; don’t get discouraged, it’s extremely competitive. Just try and it will be extremely helpful if you can get experience.
