English Major- The "Better" (UCSD) Choice or The "Smarter" Choice (UCI)?

Hey Guys,
I'm kinda freaking out because I have a day left to decide but I'm still not 100% confident of where I should be next fall. I'm between UCSD and UCI. At SD, I would be a Literatures in English major. At UCI, English. I want to go to UCSD because I love La Jolla and thought of being more than an hour away from LA is exciting. Also, UCSD has more prestige. However, little to none of the lower-divison courses I've taken at my CC will count there and I have to do a lot of foreign language. And it's a more science-oriented school. At UCI, most of my courses transfer and it's closer, but I feel like UCI is considered more of a back-up school and after how hard I've worked these past two years, I feel I deserve to go somewhere that will be worth it in the long run. I have friends at both, so that's not a factor. What do you guys think?

Go for ucsd if you are not worried about taking the additional courses.

I thought the SIR deadline was midnight?

And I vote UCSD.

midnight today or midnight tomorrow? because for applications the deadline was the midnight of the due date. i guess i’ll submit tonight though… just to be safe.

^ See, I don’t know. It’s probably tomorrow but why would you take a chance?

Although you might want to disregard anything I have to say on the topic of midnight deadlines and whatnot. I’m the chick who always gets confused about those midnight movie premieres (“The movie comes out midnight on Saturday! So is that like, Friday night at midnight or is it actually Saturday?? Which night do we show up at the theater??” etc). I also get confused around Daylight Savings Time and wonder if an hour ahead means it’s getting dark earlier or later, lol

uci is the stronger english program

^ Not by a whole lot though.

To the OP,

You should be proud of yourself because both UCSD and UCI are amazing schools. Anyways, screw UCLA because they don’t deserve you (I was reading your other posts). It’s not about which school you go to but what you do when you get there.

Best of luck to you.

Enchantedivy- I disagree. Not saying UCSD has a bad program either, their english is ranked about the same as ucsc.

The uc english programs are ranked like this.

Cal

Ucla

Uci

Davis

Santa barbara

San diego/ santa cruz

Also, uci has a very prestigous mfa in creative writing program, their most notable alum being Michael Chabon.

(Yikes, nerdy english major moment)

I disagree that UCSD has more “prestige” than UCI. It has more highly ranked programs. When I hear prestige, I think that means more like the general reputation of the school. In that regard, I don’t think there’s really any difference between UCI or UCSD (certainly not a large enough difference to make it a factor in your decision).
