english major transferring

Hey,

Wow I didn't think I'd be back on this site after almost a year of absence haha! I'm a freshmen at SUNY Binghamton, and I'm considering transferring. I'm looking for schools with a very strong writing program, and am currently interested in NYU, Oberlin, Eugene Lang at New School, and Columbia (yeah right!). I was wondering how important the high school transcript really is, and if the freshmen gpa can counteract lower high school grades.

I finished high school with a 92 average and a 1440 (790 verbal, does that help much if i'm applying as an english major?)

For my first semester at Binghamton I have a 4.0 gpa, and will try my hardest to maintain it.

I've established really great relationships with my professors and in turn can get great recommendations, but they would be from TA's. Is this a problem? One TA actually teaches the course, and the other leads the discussion for a 300-student class.

Regarding extracurricular activities, I write for the student newspaper.

Am I dreaming with my hopes of Columbia? I was already admitted to Oberlin as a freshman but ended up not going there (i sorta regret that). Does anyone know of any other strong writing programs perhaps located in NYC or Boston? I'd really appreciate any feedback! Thanks so much!
