English major ?

Very glad for the responses here, as my youngest is very much interested in English & writing, but is not interested in most of the paths that were mentioned here. Knowing that will also be helpful to her.

Thanks everyone! I feel stupid -what exactly is data mining?

Haha… I wish I knew. Actually, I believe it’s a area of computer science where people gather data from various sources and analyze it coming up with patterns and relationships in the data that would be useful for various business applications.

Thanks!

Data mining includes a whole bunch of stuff. It’s how a lot of the money that gets made on the internet gets made – using people’s search patterns to determine which ads to show them. Retailers, both on- and off-line, use it extensively to figure out what to market to their customers (and sometimes what prices to charge them). A famous example was when Target figured out that they could tell which of their customers was pregnant from buying patterns (even if that didn’t include a pregnancy test kit or discontinuing regular purchases of tampons), so that they could start promoting things like baby clothes and diapers ahead of other retailers.

I have a client that is using an extensive data set of questionnaires about food taste to help food and beverage companies understand how cultural differences in their customer base affect the way different people experience the taste of their products. Another client uses demographic data, credit bureau information, and analysis of credit card use patterns to set credit card limits and to determine what price offers specific cardholders should receive. Insurance companies regularly use such data to price casualty insurance.

Thank you…that’s a much better explanation.

So perfect for her! Can hardly believe it!

She can just enter a college and explore/study what she is interested in. College is not vocational school, though with the burden of debt many have,it is understandable that that perception has changed some. Honestly, employers are desperate for people who can write.

Undergrad can be generalist with grad or professional school more specialized or more focused on career.

She can volunteer, intern, or work during college. One of mine interned then worked for an orchestra doing administrative work and picked up a lot of skills. She also interned with an international agency that manages artists. Both places valued her writing (website, promotional materials, grants) and her research skills.

Please use old threads only for research.
