If I were to major in English, what types of VERY high paying jobs would I be able to get and would I have to go to grad school for those jobs? I LOVE writing but I need definite above financial security, like the security a doctor has. Thanks.

Go to law school. Go into publishing. Go into journalism. Go into technical writing. Get a gov't job. Become a paralegal. Teach english (teachers are always in high demand) Become an editor. Those are just a few off the top of my head.

Can you give me more detail about publishing, journalism, editing, and government jobs (graduate school and salary)? Thanks, Drew00.

Also, would any Ivy school be good for these jobs?

penn, columbia and yale are good for english, I think. so is harvard. I'm going to penn for creative writing.

See the other thread on english for my comments on publishing (which includes editing). Not a good idea. Journalism can be exciting but it doesn't pay wonderfully and is super competitive. Working for the government can pay decently but there are tons of different jobs that fall under government so it varies a lot and it would be difficult to generalize. English is not really a road to high paying jobs, I doubt anyone with a degree in english, even graduate, makes anything close to a doctor.

Truthfully, it is not realistic to think you will get a really high paying job with an English degree. Better to get some other sort of graduate degree and not continue with English.

If you work with a top newspaper or magazine that's either political or fashion-based then you'd make good money and you'd be well known, I'd think.

Yeah, like people said, you can go into law. Re en Kam, does Penn have a creative writing major, or is it just a concentration you can pick within the English major?

It's the English major with an Emphasis in Creative Writing.

Oh cool, that's what I thought.
