English Major

I want to major in English for my BA, but I don't know what colleges have good programs. I also want rigerous academics. Can anybody help me?

Unless if you have a particular area of interest, like Middle English or something, it's not going to matter terribly much where you go to school. Try to figure out where you want to go to college, not which college has the best English department.

Some schools to look at that are strong in english are Kenyon, Oberlin, Middlebury, Iowa, Cal and University of the South.

If you are female, Wellesley definitely is rigorous for English. Too rigorous even. Serious grade deflation.

Care to share your stats with us? And what state are you a resident of? By and large, every top 25 LAC and top 25 research university is going to have a strong English department. What schools are best for you depends on your preferences and your stats.

It seems to me that obsessing over which school is best in a certain discipline might make sense only for an unusual field or for a pre-professional track in which a baccalaureate degree leads logically to a particular job, and only then for the rare student who doesn't change his or her major several times in college. English has none of those characteristics. Pick a college and a setting that you love.

I am a resident of WA state, I have a 3.9 GPA, I want to go to a small college and I am in the top 15% of my class.

PS
I have wanted to major in English for about 3 years, so I really don't think I will change my mind.

nobs, I agree with some of the comments above. I think you'd have a hard time finding an academically solid college or university that doesn't have a strong English department.

Your grades and rank would qualify you for dozens of colleges. Admissions is competitive and your list should include varying selectivity, but the best starting point is to focus on ambience and character. This is especially true of small liberal arts colleges that tend to have distinctive personalities.

If you'd let us know what your wishlist would include -- part of country, urban/suburban/rural, sport/artsy, political, coed or all women's -- I'm sure you'd get more focused suggestions.
