Hello. Please could any current students (preferably those already well into their major) tell me what they think of their English major? Any info on professors, classes, layout of major, variety of classes, theses and so on would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much.

Are there any English majors at Barnard? Any information I can't get from the website would be great! :)

Thanks for the websites tiger. I've been on the Barnard site a million times though. I was hoping an English major could give some personal insight; things you can't get from an admissions officer or website. Btw, I'd be majoring in English Lit. Thanks!

lovecollege, english is supposed to be one of the best, if not the best, department at barnard. tons of barnard women go on to publish plays, novels, poetry or go into journalism or teaching. as a result the english department is huge.. the writing classes are sort of hard to get into but are supposed to be fabulous with lots of personal attention. and there are literature courses on practically everything you can imagine. because they want to keep the classes small sometimes it's hard to get into your first choice but there are so many interesting classes that this isnt really a problem. the english major does have a lot of requirements though.

Thanks scarfmadness! Yeh, I did hear it was amazing, the main reason I'm applying really! I hope the professors live up to their reputation! I saw the triangle of requirements and it didn't look so bad to me (when comparing it to other places). But maybe it's different when you get there. Thanks again!
