Just wondering how competive this major is. I might change majors (psychology) so this is just a feeler. This question is off topic but do you HAVE to complete all of the listed assist.org classes in order to be accepted? Anyways, all you english majors chime in and tell me your stats, what UC's you were accepted to, EC's, transfer agreements etc.

NOW GO!

UCLA has a wonderful list of majors under its transfers page which tells you what you need to have completed prior to matriculation (in terms of preparation for the major). English is one of the majors with an asterisk, where "demand often exceeds space" or some such.

I have no direct evidence of anything; I'll be applying next year.

it's impacted, so is psych, sorry.

I picked up the transfer adm guide from UCLA, it's says for eng u need one year or eng lit classes, 2 years of for. lang or for lit translation.

I supose those are the mins.

But it's impacted so u'll need a 3.5 at least.

I am bio/ chem major.

highschoolda,

Out of curiosity, where did you find this information about having a 3.5 GPA?

I think if you want to have a good chance of getting into the more competitive UCs, you better complete all of the courses that your CC has articulated. English has a pretty low course requirement (relative to say the physical science majors), so you really should complete as many English courses as you can as well as complete the IGETC.

GPA: 3.2
Accepted: UCI, UCSC, UCD, UCSD
Pending (a.k.a. just waiting for those rejections): UCLA, UCB

On a side note, does anyone know the difference between UCSDs "Literatures in English" and "Literature/Writing" majors?

I would imagine that one's focused on literary criticism, the other on composition.

I'm sure there're major webpages that would tell you, though.

I don't know what to say. My grades are not horrible but I just don't have the drive and determination that I used to have to succeed at school. I find it really hard for me to get good grades, this being at a CC of course. I feel like time off (as in taking the summer off) would really help me achieve better grades in the future. Perhaps it's just my study habits because I tend to either procrastinate or study quickly enough to say I made an attempt. Ugh, this is so horrible. I don't even know how I'll be able to get through my last 2 years of college. It's not that I'm depressed or anything but my perspective of possessing a college education has dropped like DELL's stock. I'm just ranting here so this obviously has nothing to do with the subject of my thread.

Deanzaholic, is 3.2 your cumulative GPA, transfer GPA or major GPA? BTW, does this really matter?

nikkei325i,

I got 3.5 from a UCLA admission rep who told me thats what's u need to have to be competative for an impacted major.

I have similar probs as u, my first semester went ok. CUm GPA 3.7.
This semester i am really struggling to get Bs in my classes.

Thankfuly it will come to an end in 7 weeks.

I was told by the UCLA representative at my school that last year (2004-2005) English majors had a min. of 3.4 GPA in order to be competitive. To most, that should be a little note of encouragement since she said that that particular held a really strong applicant pool.

Personally, I'm not sure why everyone is so worried. It's not about getting in, but really about making an impact on the campus and the world on the other side of a "degree".

For the sake of conversation:
English major, 3.81 GPA, Pres. Honor Roll, Dean's List, Phi Theta Kappa, etc.....

UCB and UCLA: pending
UCSB: received acceptance letter first of April

Good luck to everyone....

BruinMichelle you are so right. Possessing a degree, from say Yale, will not guarantee you a high-paying job. I knew some who went to schools like Harvard, Yale and Stanford but ended up at average paying jobs. It's NOT what the degree can do for you but what YOU do with the degree!

nikkei325i, 3.2 is my cummulative GPA for UC transferable courses.

I have problems with motivation too. I seriously could have had a 3.5 cummulative GPA, but I got lazy at the end of Fall qtr and all my As turned into high Bs. Story of my life.

deanzaholic, I'm happy for you that you were accepted to a prestigious such such as Davis. UCD is what I'm aiming for but UCLA, along with the hundreds of millions of other students, is my top preference. I wish you luck with UCLA and CAL. Though you GPA is most likely not on par with other English major's applying to these schools I say that you still have a chance. Be optimistic about your position because you never know what will happen!

nikkei you were right. I got rejected from Cal, but accepted to UCLA for no apparent reason (most people I've talked to believe it was my essay, but I'm inclined to disagree). I'm freaking out right now though. I could not take one of the classes I said I would during this quarter, because it wasn't offered, and I'm afraid UCLA will revoke my admissions once they realize what a bum they accepted.

deanzaholic, that doesn't sound so good!@! Well, I say talk to the counselors at UCLA to see if anything will happen. Never, I repeat, NEVER talk to the counselors at ANY CCC because obviously they don't know jack. Get some information about your options and, if any, ways for you to hold on to your acceptance if this one course really does increase the chances of your acceptance being revoked. Oh, and most of all congrats on your acceptance to UCLA!!! GO BRUINS!!!@!@!

I agree, go Bruins! was accepted at: UCB, UCLA, UPenn, Columbia and a few others.....will be a Bruin though.

Good luck to you, fellow English majors!

i got into ucla as an english major from uci... 3.3 at the time of application. i now have a 3.45 after winter quarter, but i haven't updated my wip or anything. then again, uc to uc transfer is a little different...

nikkei, I tried talking to the counselors when I visited last week, but the clerk told me to just update my schedule on the UCLA site and wait to have them review it. This one class is a major req, so I suppose it could mean me getting revoked. I told them I already registered for the class this summer, so hopefully it'll be alright.

Thanks for the congratulations, but I don't feel like it's time to celebrate just yet :(

Dean, if you intended to take the class, but couldn't because it was not offered, I cannot imagine UCLA caring - at all. They did not make the decision to accept you based on that class, and they will surely not penalize you because of course offerings! You've registered for the class and you're going to take it. I don't think they really care enough to nitpick about when you take a certain course.

Yeah I really hope so... but my stats are so low, and I still can't believe they would accept me. I just feel that if I give them any reason at all to rescind their acceptance, I'll have my admission revoked.

I'll be crossing my fingers...

I'm sending out good thoughts, Dean :-)
