English or Communications majors-plans, career aspirations, grad school?

Hey guys

Just wanted to see what any of the English / Communication Studies majors have planned for the future. Although I hope to get into UCLA (especially with the regents scholarship!) I will probably end up at Cal Poly SLO to double major in English and Communications for financial and copious personal reasons.

Nonetheless, CSU or UC, what do you guys hope to do with either your English or Communications (or if you're like me, both) degrees? I live right between Cal Poly SLO and UCSB so I've been researching their grad programs already to see if it would settle the anxiety I have over potentially picking Cal Poly over UCLA (if I get in!) by getting my masters at UCSB.

So yeah, careers, grad school plans, research plans, general chit-chat while we wait for the last of the decisions? I know this thread might remain dead because I haven't seen very many of either majors on here, but I thought I'd try!

:)

Hey,

English major here. After transfer and graduation I am applying to medical school.

@Reagon:

Why not just major in Biology or Chem if you are going into the medical field? Even if you are just trying to work in their administration facilities, I’m sure these applicants have a huge advantage simply because they are more familiar with the field.

I’m curious, I’ve never seen a pre-med majoring in English.

I’m a communications major! Applied to UCSB,UCSD, CSULB,CSUF, LMU & Chapman. If I dont get into LMU, I’m leaning torwards UCSD, since they have La Jolla Playhouse right on campus and I’m seeking a career in the theater community :slight_smile:

I’m not too sure about grad school, but I’m already eyeing Columbia’s theater management program :D

I’ve heard of English majors going onto med school. I’ve also heard that it’s hard without a better science/math background. That’s why one has to take the lower division classes eventually, I think. Don’t quote me on that.

I applied variously as a comm/sociology major (or similar). I’m interested in journalism/PR & alternatively, counseling. Grad school is a definite possibility if I go towards the counseling route.

Mytime09: I think we’re sort of on the same track career and academic wise. I’ve been looking into the PR or HR field and I was looking into a psychology clinical counseling grad program at UCSB. If nothing else, I would like to get my masters in Education. I don’t think I could go on to get my masters in English. I’m feeling worn out already by the literature and I’m barely transferring this Fall. Communications is keeping me sane :)

Are you planning on a double major or just one or the either?

I also found out about this career called a “Public Informations Officer” that sounded pretty awesome :)

Hi Indie!

I’m still sifting through potential career paths, favoring instead to take things as they come, however, it’s prudent to have sketches of the future at the very least. I’m considering law school, grad school then teaching, and/or serving in peace corps (to pay penance for my eight years of military service). Any career I do choose will work and allow me to do what I want most, which is writing.

Planning to go into pharmacy. I’m also taking my lower division bio/ chem courses while in undergrad right now.

I want to be a teacher, so I’ll most likely finish undergrad, then get my teaching credentials. Lately I’ve considered becoming an Essayist though, but I heard its hard to get published even if you’re a great writer.

Hey Justin!

I totally agree with you! I was talking to my mom today at lunch, she got her masters in psychology and she was telling me about all of the different counseling frields (she would love if I became a therapist like her) but I realized I have to see where my undergrad takes me. Maybe I’ll land a job or start liking a field I’ve never even realized existed through an internship or something. For now, I love knowing how English can be used for so many different things :)

@IndieRockNRoll – I would like to double major. I’ve been envisioning, if I get to Cal, that I’d double major in Sociology and Media Studies OR American Studies (since they are interdisciplinary majors, I have the opportunity to tailor the major to my interests, which is pretty awesome).

However if I end up at Davis, my safety, I’d major in Communication and possibly minor in sociology or English. As you can see, I have lot of different plans going on between all the different UC’s I applied to, lol.

Right now I’m doing research into grad schools, but to be honest, I don’t have a clear idea of what I’d study in grad school yet. But hopefully, I’ll be able to explore my options as I continue towards my B.A. degree.

Also, good luck with UCLA! If you get in with the Regents Scholarship, would you go? I’ve heard a lot of wonderful things about their English program.

(Incidentally, I applied to UCLA under the American Lit & Culture major :P)

@feedayeen

There are only about 11 required courses + the MCAT in order to qualify for medical school admissions. I have always been passionate about literature and writing so that’s why I am an English major. I used to think that I had to major in a science to get into medical school, but that’s not true. I also know other non-science majors who are doing pre-med.

Cheers,

Reagon

p.s. btw what are you majoring in? what are your plans?

If I end up at a UC where I plan on majoring in Communication/Media Studies, I’m most likely planning on pursuing some sort of post-Bachelor’s degree.

@Reagon:

Physics, my goal is to begin a software or hardware company in the next few years but I’ve met a lot of pre-meds in my classes so I was just wondering.
