Ok well, I am REALLY confused on this english question. If you could read the paragraph below and show me why I'm wrong, I'd sincerely appreciate it.

The 1987 election was marred by controversy over whether a woman was fit to lead, and Mankiller's margin of victory was slim. (Question) However, in the 1991 election, in a tribute to her leadership skills and hard work, Mankiller won by a landslide.

The writer is considering adding the following sentence:

Although the women's rights movement had helped many women in America gain uppermanagement positions in many companies, prejudices still existed.

Would this sentence be a relevant addition at this point in the essay, and why?

The two I was between was
A. Yes, because it explains why Mankller's margin of victory was so slim.
B. No, because it contains information that detracts from the focus of this paragraph

Well the answer is B. However, why is A wrong. While the sentence is kind of redundant, isnt it relevant because it adds to the idea that prejudice about women hurt Mankiller in her election?
