English Requirements

Hey guys,

I know the English requirements vary from school to school but had a few questions.

1: Would a literature (in my schools Literature in Translation dept) course which involves essay writing in response to critical reading count as an English course for most med schools?

2: Can the English requirement be fulfilled after the time of application as long as it is fulfilled by the time of matriculation?

Thanks so much!

If it counts toward your school’s English requirements (eg, I was required to take a “writing intensive” class for my major, which was indicated WI on my transcript), it should count toward med school too. This was the case for me, and I applied to a nice mix of top schools, state schools, and other private schools (app cycle 2010-2011). On the other hand, if it’s “just” a lit class that has some writing included but isn’t officially a writing intensive or composition or whatever designation your school gives to courses that are writing-heavy, then it probably wouldn’t count.

Yes, as can all requirements, but I imagine having a significant amount of prereqs left to take could “count” against you. (Doubt just having English left would matter at all though.)

Most of the med schools specify English or “writing intensive” course. Thus, as Kristin notes, if it satisfies your undergrad college’s writing/English requirement it will work for med school. But other courses could be acceptable as well, such as philosophy (writing intensive, not logic).
