Hey guys, so I’ve been studying for the ACT for quite a while now and my english score is by far my lowest score. Ive been getting around 27-30 on it and wanted to know if any of you had suggestions or study guides to raise my score.
For me english practice tests have definitely been the best, I raised up my score from a 25-29-(about a 32 im thinking)
I had the same problem but so far doing practice tests have been the biggest help in getting from a 29 to around a 32 now so my suggestion would be just keep doing as many tests as you can!
I went from a 29 to a 32, what is your specific problem? When you score it, see what score you get on rhetoric and then usage and mechanics, rhetoric is hard to improve, but I improved my UM by using the ACT 36 book by Barrons.
Practice tests are the way to go for sure! Finding them online is fairly easy, so just make sure that you use a few different websites so that you have a clear idea of what the person reading your essay will be looking for! Focus on writing as concisely as possible, and make sure you’re using strong vocabulary!
@chillyee just wanted to say that if your lowest score is between a 27 and 30, you’re doing awesome! But as for tips, Kaplan’s ACT prep book has a great section for punctuation rules on commas, periods, semicolons, colons, etc. I believe a great way to prepare for English is to practice. Unlike the math section, there’s only so many types of questions they can ask. Depending on what you feel you struggle with most, it may be worthwhile to review idioms and rhetorical/style questions heavily, as people commonly have trouble with these. (These are those “does this passage meet the goal of being a persuasive essay about why students should abandon cell phone usage?” with the two “yes…explanation” and two “no…explanation” answer choices, as well as commonly introverted words like lay/lie, who/whom, etc). I earned a 36 on the September 2014 English ACT and a 35 on the March 2015 English ACT by reviewing that book. Let me know if you have any specific questions or anything I can help you with!
