English Studies

Hi,

I have narrowed down my college choice to UVA or UNC Chapel Hill. I am instate in Virginia, so there is a cost difference, but I am trying to look outside that at this point of the choosing process.

Both campuses are beautiful, I have friends at both. So, my question is, does anyone know which English department is better? I will definitely be majoring in English studies; perhaps minoring in History or Foreign Language (French). So, in terms of these humanities, specifically English, which college is strongest?

Any advice would be appreciated.

You know, I can't speak to uva's english department, which i'm sure is top notch, but I'm going to be transfering to unc next semester as an english/comm/history double major and minor respectively, and I can tell you that unc has a very strong creative writing program. there is a minor called writing for the stage and screen that i was interested in but missed the deadline. if you have any interest in that you should check it out.

one way that i've used to get some kind of idea of the weight of each department, and the quality of the faculty is to use ratemyprofessor.com and go through each professor in your department of interest and see what kind of reviews students have given to them and if the ones with good reviews are the ones teaching the courses you plan to take.

i wish there was a ranking of undergraduate liberal arts departments out there but as far as i'm aware there is none, at least nothing up to date.
