On the Reading section of my ACTs I received a 34. My subscores were 18 for Social Sciences/Sciences and 17 for Arts/Literature. Shouldn't I have gotten a 35 for Reading or is there some part to scoring that I am missing?

The ACT Rounds subscores so you probably actually got 17.5 for social sciences and 16.5 for arts and literature which is a 34. It also says on the score sheet that subscores do not necessarily add up to the actual score.

Thanks for explaining
And it only took 11 hours to get a response…

The sub-scores don’t have to add up to the number you got. It could be very possible that stressed!!! is right in that they were rounded off. Also, it could be that the curve on the reading section set set to a -1 = 34 (meaning, there was no possibility for obtaining a 35 on the reading section).

The curves change with every ACT test, and can be different in each subtest as well. It is impossible to predict what your actual score will be according to the number you scored correctly, due to these factors.
