English vs. Literature

I have always be a voracious reader. I aboslutely love literature. Some of my favorite books include War and Peace, One Hundred Years of Solitude (I actually loved this one so much, I had a line from it tattooed on my back) and The Sorrows of Young Werther. This is why I would love to major in one of the two: english or literature. I understand that if I were to study English, the books I would read would be from either England or America (or another English speaking country) but I don't want to be restricted. Literature, however, seems to be more oriented towards incorporating film/television and I don't really like that. What do you all think? Is there any major that would allow me to read works from a variety of different cultures/times without having to focus so much on film?

From what I've gathered, the English dept. is significantly stronger than the lit. dept. I would do English, and then you could minor in poli. sci., lit., philosophy, Asian and African lit., etc. - all of which would allow you to explore other countries' canons of literature. You could also just major in English and take whatever classes outside of English that you wanted as electives.

The people at Blue Devil days told me that the lit major focuses more heavily on 20th c. literature, whereas the English major pulls from a much bigger time period.

The literature major is more culture based, and I think you can get away with only taking a couple of courses in film/doctumentaries/etc. Check out the requirements on the department's website.

I asked a similar question a while back, and there's the reponse I got.
