Enough safeties?

I'm a rising senior and I think I have my college list, but I'm worried that I don't have enough safeties. I feel silly asking because I'm not really a super-into-college-admissions/forum-writing type, but I'm really nervous! My number one choice is Brown and I'm probably going to ED. The others on my list are: Amherst, Williams, Tufts, Dartmouth, Wesleyan, Yale, NYU, and Rutgers (really don't want to go there, but pretty much everyone in my school applies there as a super safety)

About my school: I go to a large, super competitive(annoying) public high school in a NJ suburb

Classes: Standard 4 years of math, science, english, history, foreign language. 3 years of art (would've been 4 but my school requires a life skills class, so I took child growth). All honors classes. Last year I took AP Chem (5), AP US (5), and AP Lang (5). This year I'll take AP Calc, AP Gov, AP German, and AP Lit

Grades: I've gotten all A's. My gpa is 4.0(uw) and 4.7(w). Our school doesn't have class rank but in the top 20 out of 400

SAT's: 2280 (790-writing, 780-reading, 730-math) if you superscore its 10 points higher, not a big difference

SAT 2's: math2-790, chem-780, bio-680(lol badd i know. i took it fresh year before i really understood what they were and didn't study at all, soooo not gonna submit that one but i think one or two of the schools dont take scorechoice :[)

EC's:
-Biggest one: 4 years of being a 3 season, varsity athlete (xc, indoor, and outdoor) well actually one season i was on JV for a medical reason. and this is super intense. we practice all year round and it takes up ALOT of my time, it kinda makes it hard to do alot of other stuff,oh and will be a captain this year
-german club: 2yrs then it ended due to budget cuts
-have around 400 hours of volunteering at a summer camp
-relay for life, diabetes walk, volunteering at my local arts council. not super involved
-work at BounceU and babysit

Awards: math honors society (school wide), AATG (german award for a test i took, national), german honors society(national)

Common App essay: wrote about how my love of cooking has introduced me to new cultures and connecting that with my 2 trips abroad, and my latest project, a food blog that me and a friend created where we make food from different countries. i think it's good and sorta funny (not to sound cocky, blehh this whole admissions process makes me feel like im bragging all the time, which i HATE)

Interested in: Math, Architecture, and German as majors

So basically NYU is a safety (i think??? but i really like it) all the others i feel like are reaches! im nervous because i've never been the type to do stuff "for college" like many of my peers, but now i feel like maybe i should have a little... especially when i look at other forums and the crazy things people have done! so i just want to know if i should lower my standards a little and come up with a few more safeties, and also really want to know my chances at brown (i loved it there!)

oh boy this is super long. sorry! i appreciate any feedback :)

ok maybe this is too long for people to read. here are the highlights:

GPA: 4.7
SAT’s: 2280
SAT 2’s: math2-790, chem-780
Major EC: xc/track for 4 years

schools i’m applying to: Brown and I’m probably going to ED. The others on my list are: Amherst, Williams, Tufts, Dartmouth, Wesleyan, Yale, NYU

enough safeties?

hopefully some of you will read the long one haha, but if not there’s the basics

You are too perfect.

Seriously. Maybe a bit low on the SATs… But really it’s all looks great.

:)

ya you should probably have a few more safeties

maybe swarthmore or something, it’s kind of like the others on your list

thanks  I also wana know if anyone who goes to brown or knows someone who does or something can tell me if i have good chances there?

Hi Katie,

Thanks for replying to mine. I honestly think you need some more safeties. You never know, right? Especially since the economy isn’t doing so well, your safeties might give you some FA.

I know of a girl who went to Brown. She had like 12 AP’s and 2200 SAT’s. She was our school’s like number 3 or 4.

You should be applying to at least one lower safety, though you will almost certainly get in to NYU so the only reason to do so is FA - NYU provides essentially none.

Brown is a mid reach - apply early to maximize your chances.
